As in the past, Kirby will have the first-team defense and the second-team offense on one squad and the first-team offense and second-team defense on the other side. This way they have Ones vs Ones and Twos versus Twos, etc.

On Defense, watch these newcomers:
  • 5 - Inside linebacker, Raylen Wilson - watch him a lot
  • 44 - Defensive lineman Jordan Hall - tons of buzz on him
  • 55 - Defensive lineman Jamal Jarrett
  • 4 - Cornerback AJ Harris - have heard his name a lot for someone so young
  • The new trio on the edge is something to behold. Seriously.
    • 26 - EDGE Sam M'Pemba
    • 29 - EDGE Gabe Harris
    • 35 - EDGE Damon Wilson

On Offense, watch these newcomers:
  • 0 - Running back Roderick Robinson
  • 5 - Wide receiver RaRa Thomas
  • 6- Wide receiver Dominic Lovett - Lot of buzz about this guy
  • 7 - Tight end Lawson Luckie - maybe the most talked about guy all spring
  • 10 - Wide receiver Tyler Williams
  • 13 - Wide receiver Yazeed Haynes
  • 17 - Wide receiver Anthony Evans
  • 57 - Offensive lineman Monroe Freeling - he is being talked bout like Earnest Greene was last year

POSITION BATTLES

1. Left tackle. Austin Blaske versus Earnest Greene will both alternate on the first team.
2. Cornerback. We could see a lot of guys moving around here. The three guys in the mix are Daylen Everette, Nyland Green and Julian Humphrey.
3. Running back. With Kendall Milton out, how much will Dell McGee use Daijun Edwards and Branson Robinson? So look for Roderick Robinson (he needs a nickname) to get a heavy load, and guys like Cash Jones to get more carries than usual. Another name to watch is converted wide receiver Miles Thornton (No. 39), the talented athlete out of Sandy Creek. He will be used to fill in at running back.
4. Wide receivers. We mentioned the three out-of-state early enrollees above, but just keep in mind that Arian Smith has stayed healthy and has had a good spring. Heard his name a few times. I think Mike Bobo likes to use him.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Smart likes to practice all the special team situations, albeit without tackling on kick coverage or on punt coverage. I am looking forward to seeing how transfer Dominic Lovett looks as a return specialist.

I think the fans are going to love wideout Mekhi Mews (No. 87). He is small. Five-foot-eight and 170 pounds isn't exactly hard to tackle. but you have to catch him first. That's easier said than done as he is lightning-quick as a returner. Watch for him to run some routes with the third team.

Jared Zirkel has a big opportunity ahead of him. He can really blast kickoffs. I think we have come to take that for granted, but we shouldn't. As for field goals, sometimes he has had trouble in the past getting the ball up fast enough. In a game like this, you have new guys providing protection because you have to create a field goal team for each side. So we may see a few guys who won't be providing protection in the fall.

Guys who won't play

Georgia lost three guys during camp in addition to the ones we knew were rehabbing surgeries or injuries prior to camp.
Jalon Walker, Mykell Williams, Pearce Spurlin, Joshua Miller, Marvin Jones Jr., Kendall Milton

TRANSFER PORTAL

The NCAA Transfer Portal window has been changed. It actually opens tomorrow, April 15th. Georgia needs to shed four of five scholarship players to make room for the incoming freshmen who will arrive at the end of May. Just looking over the depth chart, I would consider these guys as possibilities:
  • Rian Davis
  • Chad Lindberg
  • Griffin Scroggs
  • Aliou Bah
  • Jackson Meeks

GUYS WHO WILL SHINE

Here are the players who can enter into the G-Day Hall of Fame on Saturday. But none of them will be in the Jonathan Rumph/Matt Landers wing. These guys will rock Saturday AND in the fall.

86 - WR Dillon Bell
6 - WR Dominic Lovett
7 - TE Lawson Luckie
22 - RB Branson Robinson
71 - OL Earnest Greene
2 - LB Smael Mondon
22 - S Javon Bullard
78 - DL Nazir Stackhouse

I am leaving out Malaki Starks, Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, Jamon Dumas-Johnson, and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. The reason is, I don't know how much they will use them. If Smart and company do decide to play the stars, these guys will show out. They are all among the best in the nation and could play for anyone.
