If you have ever driven into Texas on I-10 from Louisiana, you have seen the sign that says "El Paso 857 miles". He had that put up so "people could see how big Texas really is"
So here is the funny part about his funeral. He is being buried in Austin, TX. For all the years I have known him, as an avid A&M guy, he made it clear that he did not, no matter what happened, want to be buried in Austin, TX. I work with a lot of A&M guys, and I can not exaggerate the hate they have for the Texas Longhorns. However, for his wife, the lure of her husband being interred in the Texas State Cemetery was too much. It is quite an honor but I am sure he is not happy about it.
