Let's pause and take a minute to laugh at GT football (long)

  • Their coach has won a total of 9 games in three years
  • UGA has outscored him 97-7 in two games, with series record-margin wins of 52-7 and 45-0
  • He lost to Citadel
  • He lost 73-7 to Clemson at home
  • Syracuse went 1-10 in 2020, with its lone win coming against GT
  • They lost their last two games of 2021 by a combined score of 100-0
  • He was hired to improve recruiting but 247/Rivals has their 2022 class in the 50s
  • The last two classes of Paul Johnson (#48 and #44) are comparable in terms of final rankings to Collins' last two classes (#48 and #53) - no portal for CPJ, though
  • Their 'football GM' just left this afternoon to go to UNC, alum/recruiting staff guy Errin Joe left for UConn, and another recruiting staff member left for Arkansas
  • Their best player - RB Jahmyr Gibbs - left (although going to Bama isn't funny)
  • Arguably their best player on defense (Ivey) left for Ole Miss
  • Their best alumnus coach/recruiter Tashard Choice fled to USC (and then Texas) on a lateral move
  • Their second best alumnus coach/recruiter (who in Sep 2020 said GT and Collins would win a national championship soon) escaped for Michigan St on a lateral move
  • Their second best recruit spurned GT yesterday and signed with Nebraska, possibly to the only team with a coach more on the hot seat than Collins
  • Their offense finished 90th out of 130 teams in 2021...the OC was let go
  • The new OC Chip Long comes from 2-10 Tulane, who finished 73rd out of 130 teams on offense
  • Their defense finished 117th of 130 teams...the DC was retained
  • GT alumnus and ESPN analyst Roddy Jones: 'It’s Year 3, and it’s still not working. You’re still trying to lay a foundation, and it’s a lot of the same guys. Why are they still so bad on defense? They’re worse.” (The Athletic, 11/22/21)
  • They flash big 'Money Down' signs on the sidelines during 3rd downs on defense
  • In 2021, GT finished 125th out of 130 teams on FBS Opponent Third Down Conversion Percentage
  • Their secondary combined for a grand total of 1 INT in 2021 (GT had 3 total, the other two were by an LB)
  • The new secondary coach -- alumnus Travares Tillman -- was cornerbacks coach at Mich St in 2021
  • In 2021, Mich St finished 130th out of 130 teams in passing yards allowed (324.8 ypg)
  • In 2022, Geoff Collins will be in Year 4 of a 7-year contract, making around $3.3 million
  • The buyout would have been $12 million after 2021, and will drop to a 'mere' $7.2 million after 2022
  • Coincidentally, former GT basketball coach Paul Hewitt also 'likely' received a buyout around $7 million after signing a 'lucrative five-year deal with a rollover provision baked in. That rollover clause meant Hewitt's contract automatically extended by one year after each passing season. It also means Hewitt always had at least six years on his contract, no matter how much time passed.' (ESPN, 3/2/11); GT also had to buy out former bball coach Brian Gregory for $1.3 million, and Josh Pastner is 9-13 at GT in '21-'22 (but did win the ACC tourney last year before being bounced in NCAA Rd 1 - still better than Crean!)
  • GT also had to pay Paul Johnson's [very mild] buyout of $1 million
  • GT also had to pay ~$2.5 million to Temple for Collins' buyout in 2019 just for the privilege of hiring him
  • One more buyout: Oregon State sued current GT AD Todd Stansbury in 2019 for failing to repay a $2.1 million buyout in full when Stansbury left for GT in 2016
  • 'Stansbury made about $1 million in repayments toward the debt, which was accruing interest at 9 percent. Stansbury stopped making payments, and OSU filed a lawsuit on Dec. 18, 2019.' (Oregonian, 2/15/20)
  • 'Georgia Tech restructured Stansbury’s contract and provided him with a loan in order to satisfy the Oregon State buyout debt. Stansbury’s salary was reduced from $937,500 to $650,000 through the 2025-26 school year, the remainder going toward the buyout loan.' (Oregonian, 2/15/20)
  • GT's AD rainy day fund budget was projected to run at a $9 million deficit in 2019 (AJC, 1/31/19), and $10 million in 2020 due to Covid
  • 'Tech’s season attendance [was] its lowest in more than 30 years. The season average will be 37,819 [incl sellout vs UGA]. The last time Tech’s season average was that low was 1989, when it was 34,352. However, capacity for the stadium at that point was 43,719. An average home attendance of 37,819 will constitute 69% of capacity, a drop in 12 percentage points from the 2019 season average (44,599) by percentage of capacity. ' (AJC, 11/15/21)
  • GT's next opportunity to generate home football attendance is their Spring Practice game
  • GT decided to schedule this game on a Thursday night
  • ...on St Patrick's Day, March 17th
  • ...at 6pm, right in the middle of Atlanta rush hour
  • Winter doesn't technically end until March 20th, so this will actually be a 'Spring game in Winter'
  • good(?) news for GT's brand is the game and a lot of empty seats will be on TV
  • ...but on the ACC Network
  • ...and competing with the first round of the NCAA Tournament/March Madness on four other channels
  • ...but at least there will [presumably] be more GT fans in attendance than the last game held at Bobby Dodd Stadium (UGA's 45-0 win)
  • GT's recent claim to fame over its only rival UGA was boasting about 'winning' 50% of the 1990 national title with Colorado, after having also shared a tie that year with a 6-win UNC team
  • That claim died on January 10, 2022, when UGA won another undisputed National Championship
  • The man currently in charge of winning a share of GT's next championship has intentionally chosen this hairstyle:

Sounds really bad, right?

I thought about listing this as '(ND) Prayer Request' -- but seems like there are enough serious ones on the board right now to keep Him busy. But it does bring up the age-old question: can God create a problem (GT football) so big that even He can't fix it?

Is this karma for Jasper Sanks non-fumble in 1999? For GT players shredding/eating our hedges after each win in Sanford? For Bobby Dodd leaving the SEC?

Well, I don't have that answer...but I do know that when you log onto this board and complain that Kirby isn't playing the right QB -- or moan that we didn't get a recruit -- or argue that our stadium concession situation is terrible -- just remember that things could be so much worse...and now is an ideal time to reflect on how fortunate we are at the moment for UGA's leadership, players, coaches, and staff.

Be grateful and appreciative because the worm always turns (but hopefully not until waaaay in the future for GT...)

Go Dawgs!
