Gurley thread got me thinking.

Has anyone had knee or hip replacement?
Any recommendations on where to go?

Thanks

I am with Resurgens Orthopaedics.
We are better than Peachtree and AOC
Lol. I have to agree. I’m a PT and had Dr Hanna perform my TKA 4 years ago. Imho the best in Atlanta. Dr Steve smith at POC and Dr KEN Kress at Total Joint Specialists I’m Alpharetta-Cumming also a solid choice.

Hit me up with any questions as I’ve rehabbed hundreds of these

One of You guy’s founders, John Garrett, did my ACL in 89, if i recall. He was the Falcons ortho at the time, and one of the early pioneers of the current, less invasive, method. Was bending it within 2-3 days ( now its 2-3 hours). Wonderful man and Doctor, and I still have the video of the surgery taken from inside my knee

Where are you? My dad just had total knee replacement. But he’s in coastal NC.

It’s been great though. Wish he did it 10 years ago.

What’s your location? And/or would you travel for an orthopedic
North of Atlanta and possibly, depends on the distance I guess.
Samsara has more insight on the Atlanta region physicians. I’ve treated Mary Albert’s patients and I’ve had nothing but good results. Ranging from full range of motion by the first two weeks and then being discharged in 8-12 visits.

Honestly if they’re a knee specialist I don’t think you can go wrong with any MD. Key is complying with exercise and icing and performing your physical therapy.

Atlanta magazine puts out a special ranking the top 100 every year. That may can help you too

John Waldrop at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus. He just did a total knee on my wife. He repaired my best friend's ACL and meniscus tear in 1997 at age 35. 22 years later he plays tennis and pickleball over 200 days a year with no issues. But there are lots of great orthopedics out there.

I used Dr. Waldrop and he is excellent. Highly recommend him.

Dr. W. Allen Hughes - Morton Plant Hospital - Clearwater, FL. He did both of mine (matching set of Zimmers) and Hulk Hogan's replacement hips, too. Seriously.

In Macon,Middle Georgia there is no one better than Dr Thornbury at Othro Ga..He did both of my hips and my left knee and I am 69 & feeling fine.Praise GOD for Dr T..GO DAWGS! Oh yea,He is a True Dawg Fan

As for hips you want a guy who does anterior replacement. WAY, way, faster recovery. Other than that there are allot of very competent docs around ATL. But my advice is find someone who does allot of the joint you need fixed. Someone who attended a top med school and followed it up with residency then a fellowship to hone their craft. Houston Clinic in Columbus is good, Peachtree Ortho in ATL, Ortho Atlanta, Resurgeons, all have good hip/knee folks. The coming thing is stem cell therapy to regrow joint cartilage. Baylor Med School and Baylor Hospital in DFW is doing this in a trial and a man I know has had it done v replacement. It takes some time for it to work but so far so good. This stem cell technique is coming so avoid replacement for as long as you can.

He did my ACL surgeries in the late 80's.

Stem cell not coming soon enough to help anyone who already has full blown OA. Might be developed enough to help my grandkids one day but the jury is still out. And yes, Duralde is fantastic, but he is one of many options for RTC pathology in Atlanta.

I had total knee replacement a year ago, and it was a good decision. I'm in Florence, SC so I can't give you any surgeon recommendations for North Georgia. Like some others have stated work hard on your post-surgery PT and it is a wise decision. I plan to get the other knee replaced soon.

I’m gonna guess the avg age of Venters posting in this thread is 57 (I’m @ the over on that #, BTW, so not judging)

Not trying to start a literal food fight, but if you have early signs of OA it may be worth your time to read about Carnivore or Keto dieters. A lot of it’s anecdotal but interesting.
Not an arthritis cure but relief and maybe a slowdown of its progression.

Duralde is great shoulder guy, but we have plenty of guys and ladies who are just as good.
There are allot of ortho's who are competent; who can do repairs. Duralde is one of the few who are elite. You are aware that he's perfected a repair for patients who are not candidates for full shoulder replacement but who require that procedure? That isn't the only technique he's developed either. There is a reason pro athlete patients come to see him from around the world. Why the Braves paid him tons. I'll take Xavier in a heartbeat if I'm looking for one of the best.

Don't know what it took to get into the trial at Baylor but gonna keep tabs JIC. Have had Bothe knees scoped and the right one is showing ominous signs again. It's always something. Getting older sucks.

Yes. Seems a lot of the knee patients who had arthroscopic menisectomy/chondroplasty procedures in the 1990s are TKA patients today :(
