It seems like a huge factor is NIL, and playing time, for most in the portal. If we are trying to save our war chest for retaining players we already have, and players are entering for one of those two reasons, then we can deduce that the player is not good enough to start, and therefore not got enough to get additional resources. So, we are losing depth, but not going out of our way to keep them.
I understand this is all very elementary. AD Mitchell leaving for other reasons is an outlier. We’re not breaking the bank to keep these depth pieces from leaving, and maybe we would have if they were good enough to start already
