We'll catch grief all season for having a powder puff schedule, but who can account for the rest of our division being so lame? And yes, I know we had Oklahoma and were forced to cancel. That's a different discussion. Think of the nineties and the early 2000s, perhaps the biggest SEC game of the year was Florida-UT at times. UT has been stuck in neutral for years. Florida shows signs of being the next Tennessee (in a negative sense) instead of the next Georgia. These programs get into the cycle of hiring new coaches in desperation, firing them after three years, rinse and repeat. It's a program killer. Kentucky is like that scene in Monty Python/Holy Grail where the army keeps charging but never quite gets there. Same "charging" frames shown repeatedly. "This new QB" is always supposed to change things in Lexington. South Carolina? Steve Spurrier spent most of his time on the golf course and still put out a better product than his successors.
Richt left Smart with a nice talent base, but Smart's molding of that base into a dynasty has been pretty flawless. People may quibble over handling of QBs or other issue, but the best way to appreciate the rise of UGA is to look at its divisional rivals, and their struggles just to make a bowl. I figure UT will have a nice offense again; Heupel has a system that moves the ball and puts up points. But will he ever have a defense? Florida lacks even an SEC-worthy QB. Their goal is to win six. Rest of the conference is uninspiring.
