I can remember in 2017 suggesting a statue somewhere of the "five who came back." Five seniors, including Chubb and Michel, decided to stay one more year and get the program on sound footing. We played for a national championship and gave a large share of credit to those five seniors who made a difference.
In 2022, similarly, we were characterized by "the 15 who left"--that is, to the NFL. Twelve or so guys transferred, also, and none transferred in. We then ran the table and won the national championship by the biggest bowl score ever.
In five years we went from needing to hang on to guys to the capability to all but wipe the roster and repeat a national championship.
In all this, Kirby has won no coach of the year awards. He is still thought to be "an elite recruiter."
