I’ve read a good bit about the incident and the P-63 fighter has a significant blind spot and likely didn’t see the B-17. He was also likely losing more altitude than anticipated in the hard turn he was taking.

Obviously one or both pilots made fatal mistakes but it almost certainly wasn’t intentional.

It does but I’d rather think it was a control surface malfunction in the old warbird like a rudder cable failed or the rudder or an aileron stuck.
