Florida
Gatorsports: Florida basketball: 3 things learned from Phil Knight Tournament heading into Florida A&M matchup

“Forward Kowacie Reeves appeared in just one of the three games over the weekend, an eight-minute stint off the bench against Oregon State. But Golden said Tuesday it was not a result of disciplinary reasons and blamed himself for not managing rotations better.

Golden said he was going with the hot hand in guard Trey Bonham, who took over for Reeves in the second half of the Florida State game and started all three games over the weekend. Bonham scored 23 points against Xavier and 19 against Oregon before being limited to 3 points on 0 of 9 shooting in the West Virginia loss.
"Wacie got the short end of the stick," Golden said. "That’s on me. He didn’t deserve to not play, but just kind of caught in the moment. It just kind of happened and he’ll be back out there (Wednesday) night.”

“West Virginia scored 20 points off 14 Florida turnovers, while Xavier scored 20 points off 11 Florida turnovers. Florida needs to be stronger with the ball moving forward when facing pressure defenses.
"There are other teams currently that pressure like that, like a (Texas) A&M or an Auburn," Golden said. "We’re going to see it again and we have to handle it better, but again we picked some things out of that game to say OK we can do this to alleviate some of that pressure and do this to take some heat off our guards to be able to attack it better.”

“Growing up, Kendall Chones didn’t realize his father was Jim Chones — at least not that Jim Chones. The 6-foot-11 forward played five seasons in Cleveland, including the 1975-76 Miracle of Richfield season, before winning an NBA Championship as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

But Chones downplayed his basketball life at home so his triplet sons and two daughters could discover sports organically.

“They came home one day when they were 7 or 8 and said, ‘These guys at school were saying you’re Jim Chones,’ ” says the Cavs radio network analyst. “ ’They gave us cards for you to autograph.’ ”

HOF Paul Westphal SG USC BOS, PHO, SEA, NYK 1972-1984 born 11-30-1950 died 1-2-2021

“When Paul Westphal arrived in Phoenix, Arizona in 1975, he came armed with the lessons he had learned during three seasons coming off the bench for the storied Boston Celtics. One lesson was always be prepared when your number is called. In the seventh game of the 1974 NBA Finals, Westphal scored 12 points, dished out six assists, and hounded perennial All-Star Oscar Robertson from end to end for 31 crucial minutes. In Phoenix, with the Suns, Westphal developed into one of the best all-around guards in the NBA, being named to four consecutive All-Star rosters. In 1977, the ambidextrous slasher earned his first of four straight all-league nods. He averaged better than 20 points per game for five straight seasons, one of the most efficient players in the game. Dynamic, sure-footed, and intelligent, he kept defenders off-balance as he twisted, faked, and weaved his way through traffic for acrobatic shots. In 1976, Westphal and the Suns scrapped and clawed their way to the NBA Finals with hard-fought series wins over the Seattle Supersonics and defending champion Golden State Warriors. Westphal averaged 21 points and 5 assists per game in the playoffs that year.”
