UT Daily Beacon: Tennessee basketball looks to bounce back at Georgia
“The most recent road trip to Starkville resembled a November loss to North Carolina. Poor play in the first half put the Vols in a hole, and a second-half comeback couldn't bring them out of it. Another road trip to Athens awaits Tennessee (11-4, 1-1 SEC).
The Vols fave Georgia (12-3, 2-0 SEC) on Saturday at noon, looking to right the course on the road.
"I don’t care if we’re at home, on the road," Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes said. "I don’t think it that matters. It’s about winning and it’s about you’re going to be in a close game, whether you’re here, on the road. And you’ve got to execute any time you come down the last four minutes of the game. It’s going to get down to execution on the road, the defensive end and the offensive end."
Post-play is a big question mark for Tennessee coming out of the Mississippi State loss. Tobe Awaka and Jonas Aidoo have not played good when they've faced other talented big men.
Aidoo fouled out against Mississippi State and Awaka finished with four. Tolu Smith III had his way in the paint, either hitting the bucket or getting to the line.
A lot of that was failing on the front-end of the play, Barnes said.
"That’s doing your work early," Barnes said. "Normally when you foul, you get behind, you slap down because you’re not in position. It all goes back to being alert. I’ve used the term all the time, do your work early so you’re not playing catch up. When you play catch up, you probably feel like you’re desperate and you swipe down or you don’t get out there in time."
Luckily, they may not have an issue against the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs feature four shooters that hit for over 36% from deep. As a team, Georgia shoots 35% from beyond the arc.
"Against pressure, they get into a quick ball screen a lot and they spread you out and they’ve got guys that are going to shoot the ball when they’re open and it’s tough," Barnes said. "You got to do a lot of multiple things. You got to handle the action at the ball, but you got to have those guys on the back side ready to rotate and try to keep the ball in front of them."
Dalton Knecht finding his offensive rhythm
Knecht scored 28 points against Mississippi State with 26 coming in the second half. His performance followed a series of uncharacteristic night.
Since scoring 21 points against Illinois on Dec. 9, Knecht only hit double digits once against Norfolk State.
Then He dropped his 28 points at Mississippi State.
"Well, it was good," Barnes said. "I mean, obviously we need that. And again, we need him to continue to, again, consistency. We need that, we need to get everybody going with it. I do know he’s making a conscious effort to try to be better defensively and we need him to do that."
The majority of Knecht's improvements have come on the defensive end over that time. His defense was something that Barnes has called on him to improve.
The shots fell in the second half, letting Knecht get hot, but his defense will keep him on the court.
"Just trying," Barnes said. "I think it is all effort. I think defense is effort. Obviously anticipation, but it’s a want to. And, again, I know he wants to be better."
Knecht will be a crucial piece when the Vols fave Georgia in Athens at noon ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN2.”

Hoops Central: #5 Tennessee at Georgia
“• Rick Barnes and Mike White both joined the SEC in 2015- 16. Barnes is 9-2 against White, posting an 8-2 ledger during the former's time at Florida (2015-22) and winning the lone matchup between their current schools.”
“• In the SEC road opener at Mississippi State (1/10/24), Dalton Knecht (28) and Zakai Zeigler (26) became the first Tennessee duo to post 25-plus points in a game in over eight years. The last instance came on 11/24/15, when Armani Moore (29) and Kevin Punter Jr. (26) did so against Army West Point.
• Knecht, who scored 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting in the second half alone against the Bulldogs, is the only Power Six player in the nation to score 24-plus points on the road thrice this season, doing so in each opportunity. He is averaging 29.7 ppg on the road, shooting 31-of-50 (62.0 percent) overall and 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) from deep.
• Zakai Zeigler is shooting 18-of-42 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range over the last five games and has four-plus makes in four of them. Before that stretch, he was at 104- of-326 (31.9 percent) from deep in his career, including 9-of-37 (24.3 percent) this season, with four makes in just two of his 75 appearances.”

Boston Globe: The Hoophall Classic is back and full of future NBA and WNBA stars. Here’s who you need to watch
“The region got a treat when it was announced that Florida’s Montverde Academy, where Maine native Cooper Flagg plays, would face Brockton’s AJ Dybantsa and California’s Prolific Prep at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
They are two of the best young players to ever come out of New England. Flagg, a 6-foot-9-inch Duke commit, is ranked atop the Class of 2024 by ESPN. Dybantsa, a walking bucket at 6-8, leads the 2025 national rankings. They’re the biggest names at Hoophall purely from their star trajectories; the local ties take the excitement up a notch.
Outside of Dybantsa, Prolific Prep also boasts Tyran Stokes, the nation’s top-ranked sophomore. Undefeated Montverde is considered the best high school team in the country, with other stars including seniors Asa Newell (ranked 11th by ESPN), Liam McNeeley (13th), and Derik Queen (15th). The arena should be full for this matchup, which is being televised on ESPN2.”
