UGASports.com: Preview: Georgia at Texas

Houston Chronicle columnist [Before] the loss to Arkansas:

“Just four games remain in the SEC basketball season, and not only is Texas on the bubble but Rodney Terry’s future is very much in limbo. The Longhorns are fast coming to a crossroads where Kevin Eltife and Chris Del Conte have to decide if they’ve seen enough to keep their head basketball coach moving forward. They didn’t return a message.

My educated guess is it’s trending toward a new coach next season. Maybe that’s unfair, considering Terry is a first-class person and a great ambassador for the school, salvaged the 2022-2023 season and not only stabilized the program but took it to the doorstep of the Final Four with an overachieving club that does not have a single player off that roster on an NBA club.

But it’s about winning. Sadly, the past two years the program has regressed. Texas was average last year but made the NCAA Tournament, won a game and flirted with an upset of Tennessee. This year it has gone backward further in a 16-11 season that looks to be reaching a dead end with little promise.

Terry makes $3 million a year and has three years left on his contract, and it’d take $5.8 million to buy him out. Does Texas keep Terry and hope he rebounds with a strong season next year even though it’s very likely freshman phenom Tre Johnson leaves for the NBA (even though two sources told me he thinks he’s not ready for the NBA and could maybe use another year in college.)

That said, I’ll be shocked if he returns. This roster was poorly constructed, which falls on the heads of Terry and general manager Chris Ogden because the two Indiana State transfers haven’t performed at a high level, Jordan Pope and Tramon Mark haven’t brought consistent scoring, and the undermanned frontcourt doesn’t have the physicality or the size to get Texas easy points.

Texas’ half-court offense, which relies on too much isolation, has been a disaster. The team relies too heavily on Johnson. ….

Money will be a big factor in the decision because of the buyout for Terry and his staff. Plus, Texas would have to pay another buyout for a high-profile candidate if it can lure one. I believe Del Conte is already vetting candidates — as he should — and has high on his list Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, who might be the top candidate. He’s a longtime Mark Few disciple and a very good coach whom I think Texas could get even though the 50-year-old is at a true basketball school. Lloyd has an $8 million buyout. … Another candidate would be McNeese State’s Will Wade, who was fired at LSU after a federal investigation into illegal payments for players and who had a two-year, show-cause NCAA penalty that expires after this season. He’s a very good coach as well, a former assistant under VCU’s Shaka Smart, who has a 20-6 record (44-8 over two years) and already won the Southland Conference this year.

… A source tells me Del Conte might try again to lure John Calipari to Austin as he contemplated before promoting Terry, but Calipari hasn’t had a great season, either, even though Joe Lunardi has the Hogs as one of the last four in. Interestingly, Texas plays at Arkansas on Wednesday and very much needs to win. CBSsports.com currently has Texas out of the field of 68. They are only 7-11 in quad 1 and 2 victories and have no eye-popping non-conference wins to tout.

ESPN Analytics put Texas’ chances of even making the tourney at 52%. Bottom line, Texas may think making a change is too expensive a move, what with a $20 million-plus bill coming in revenue-sharing starting July 1 and the necessity of prioritizing football. …

Del Conte might also be worried about the public backlash from firing a Black coach, the only one on the staff of the 21 sports, but Longhorn Nation appears fed up with the current direction of the program if social media is any gauge. It doesn’t help that Terry doesn’t have a strong recruiting class and might have to totally remake the roster once again. Even Terry’s most ardent supporters tell me they know he must win some games down the stretch. Perhaps Terry can save his job and buy himself at least another year, but he may have to win two games in the SEC Tournament and one or two in the NCAA’s. But it’s no guarantee.

And it doesn’t help at all that other top programs in the state, including Houston, Texas A&M and Texas Tech are having great seasons. Could Texas go to the well once more and try to hire Red Raiders coach Grant McCasland? Alumnus Royal Ivey with the Houston Rockets would be a long shot but has never been a head coach other than leading the South Sudan Olympic team. …

Terry has never been defensive and is handling the pressure well. “You should never have anxiety or worry about things in your life,” he said Tuesday. “If you feel like you have so much pressure in your life, you need to pray. You need to give it to God. God will take care of everything. He’s going to be there when you’re doing well and when you’re rock bottom.”

“A source told me that the current basketball team received only $3.8 million in NIL payments for its players — Terry requested $5 million — and Tre Johnson received over $1 million. That leaves precious little for the other sports.”
