Recently someone bumped old posts from 2016 when there were Kirby doubters. Some never wanted him hired, and during the tough days of 2016--a near upset lost to Nicholls State, a loss to Vandy, a loss to Tech--those doubters had some ammunition, though most understood that transition years can be sketchy. That year was VERY sketchy, and the following season blew it right out of our collective memory.

But I'll confess to being more concerned at a different period. 2017 all was roses after that Rose Bowl and allllmost going all the way against Bama. 2018, we came up a little short in Atlanta again, and a disheartening loss to Texas. So a little anticlimactic. THEN, in 2019, we took another half-step or so backwards with a poor final year for Jake Fromm, with a failed offensive coordinator. Following this, if you couldn't draw too much from the Covid year in 2020, what you could draw wasn't positive. Where were the QBs? Were we going to start losing to Florida again?

So here's what we had: that brilliant second year of 2017. We all know second years can be big ones. But then you could argue that, for different reasons, there was a little sliding backwards going on. It was sliding on a very high plain, but for the millionth time as a Dawg fan, you had to wonder would we EVER knock off that final lid?

We did it. And we haven't look back. But how many remember sitting in your covid castle and having (mild) doubts about where we were headed?
