I had a fun discussion with a teacher colleague about high school athletes and how different sports seem to shape a student's academic disposition. Some of the archetypes and cliches are spot on. I thought I'd bring this to the vent and let you'll tell stories about the athletic and academic prowess of your younger days.

In my 17 years teaching I have found that the students who run cross country are the most reliable and do the best work. I honestly think its a pain tolerance thing: if they can manage the pain of running miles and miles then sitting through a boring lecture or pressing through to get an assignment completed isn't such an obstacle.

The weirdest and most fascinating students are those who wrestle. I once had a wrestler come in with a huge dip in his mouth, lip poking out and spitting in a cup. Wasn't even trying to hide it while I was up teaching. I threw my arms in the air and said, "What are you thinking, dude? I can't believe you're dipping!" His eyes got big and he reached into his mouth and pulled out a wad of beef jerky. He said, "Sorry, I'm not allowed to eat the entire piece so I'm just savoring the flavor and spitting out the calories."

Yall tell some stories. I don't care about what. It ain't like we got football to think about.
