I'm watching a draft show right now that has tons of behind the scenes footage of various teams during the draft. As the Falcons are on the clock at #8, Ryan Poles of Chicago calls Fontenot to talk trade. The Bears were the very next pick at #9 and wanted Rome Odunze. They had to feel a little concerned, though, that the Falcons were going to take him at #8.
So Poles calls Fontenot while he's on the clock and offers him a future 4th round pick to move from #9 to #8. The Falcons HAD TO KNOW that the Bears wouldn't take Penix since they just drafted Caleb Williams at #1. Fontenot quickly turns him down.
What the hell? The Falcons were 100% going to get their guy in Penix at #9 and nab a 4th rounder in the process. I mean, it's a free draft pick. For nothing. You still get Penix. This is simpleton stuff.
I'm convinced I could be an NFL GM.
