Why would we "celebrate" Prince's life? What life? He was reclusive and narcissistic. He changed his name to a dang symbol.

I don't watch local news, but my wife does. The local channel spent 5 mins talking about the life of Prince..........

I have never understood, unless the publicists pay for news air time, why my local channel would do anything more than a passing comment when someone likes this dies. Our life would not be changed one single bit if he had never sung a song.

It saddens me because another person has died. But many people die without any fanfare. People who have done greater things in their lives besides being self centered.

Just a thought.

He was a famous, he was a celeb and he was brilliant in the music industry, although, THAT is only by personal preference of his music. Obviously, many loved it. I wasn't a huge fan of his music. Have a couple of favs though and for sentimental reasons.

All that said, he was a very charitable guy, very kind to his employees. Did you know, any city he had a concert scheduled, if they had a children's hospital or nursing home, he'd go there before a concert? He'd have a mini concert if allowed or take stuffed animals, make donations, etc . He just didn't blast his good works to everybody like say.......Trump or Sean Penn, etc.

Never met him. But DID know someone who worked for him. That person became a very good charitable fundraiser and started an annual event and endowment at UGA in one of the schools. He learned thru Prince. He died a few years ago but I'm on the board of this foundation.

So yes, in a round about way, Prince changed my life. And for the better. Learned the lesson of "better to give, than to receive."

The guy was also unremittingly loyal to his long time friends and associates. He never left his home town for L.A like everybody else.
He may have seemed reclusive to the nation, but in his community he was the most approachable superstar around. He road his bike, shopped for records and held parties at his house for locals.

Trump? OK, I get it now.

I am very sorry that it took Prince to change your life. Maybe you just weren't paying attention along the way. No offense to Prince, but there are thousands of people living in your town who do more with less advantage than Prince ever did.

Why an eccentric rock singer is considered a prophet in our society is beyond me. Don't get it. I enjoy the music. His life is his. I don't learn from them. I just enjoy the music.

It saddens me that he died. But I bet most of the ceremonies were perpetuated by his label to sell more stuff. Are we to "celebrate" everyone who makes music?

Barry Manilow had as many hits. Are we to "celebrate" him when he dies? I am sure he has charitable organizations he funds without fanfare.

How about Johnny Mathis? Stevie Wonder? Tony Bennett?

Prince is important to his generation. To place him as royalty is really obsured when you look at the body of work of so many performers. Next.

That sounds like my neighbor. Let's celebrate my neighbor. My neighbor also travels overseas on missions trips.

Maybe "changed my life" wasn't the right words.

All the others will get their due when they're gone. It's what the fans do and the press laps it up.

The guy was an icon, and he was extremely talented.
There is no harm in celebrating his unique abilities that I can see.
I don't own any of his music and I wasn't interested in going to one of his concerts, but I can still hear the genius of his talent.

Mathis and those other's mentioned are really talented, but the cultural stamp isn't there like the truly iconic artist make.
Sinatra
Elvis
The Beatles
Madonna
Michael Jackson
Prince
They all made their mark in deeper and broader ways than other greats.

Excellent post, my thoughts exactly.

It saddens you when another person dies? You must be sad all the time.
