Not an awful drive coming down here, although I did drive through some very very hard rain at times.... Like 10 feet of visibility... And it would alternate between that and just being cloudy with no rain, over about 150 miles.
Gainesville is like a very big version of Sandy Springs, as I have said before. I have never seen so many red lights so close together that take so long. People who complain about playing the football game in Jacksonville every year and suggest that we go home and home really should spend the weekend down here at this place. I guarantee they would not want to come here every other year.
I had lunch at Woodstack BBQ in Valdosta. That was a good call. It obviously took a lot longer than fast food would have, but was so much better. The fried okra was actually full pieces of okra, which I really enjoyed. Their brisket was tender with an excellent flavor, likewise for their ribs. Perfect portion size too.
With the game going into extra innings last night, I am sure I was not alone in thinking back to 2012 with the 16 inning game that we played. We showed a lot of fortitude the next night coming back in beating them behind a gem from Michael Palazzone. I remember it rained that day too. I remember Peter Verdin getting into it with that little bastard Casey Turgeon (and I remember the same thing happening with Daniel Nichols two years later). I remember how great it felt to get that win. I remember having dinner afterward at the Waffle House, and how that was the best Saturday night dinner of the whole season. And I remember playing tooth and nail with them on Sunday in 2012... Levi Hyams smashed a liner with a couple guys on base that Nolan Fontana seemed to jump about 5 feet for and caught in the tip of his glove. That really seem to rob the momentum from us, and we went on to lose. Driving back that day/ night it started to become questionable whether it was really going to happen for that team.
This can be a "full circle" thing... We may head back up the interstate tomorrow confident that it will happen for this team.
