I’m coaching my son’s 12u football team this year. Couple of notes…
  • My son has never played
  • I’ve never coached football
  • I haven’t played since 9th grade
  • None of the coaches have coached FB before
With that being said, my knowledge of the game as far as concepts, techniques, fundamentals etc is pretty good. When it comes to offensive terminology I’m a little lost, luckily we’re keeping things simple with some sweeps, ISOs, counters, and quick passes.

The thing I enjoy the most is trying to coach the way Kirby would, meaning, I like to preach physicality, toughness and mental toughness, relentlessness, and intensity. I really enjoy Oklahoma drills and teaching proper tackling, wrap ups and take downs. I’m very vocal and I like to rile them up and I especially like to challenge them. For example “you’re a big boy but you’re playing weak. Utilize your size and strength. I need you to PROVE to me that you’re the strongest man on the team”. It may sound harsh but I know the players know that I’m pushing them to be their best.

Any helpful tips to help me out and to keep things interesting and fun, yet a constant challenge, for these kids? Thanks
