on the win over tech.
-First, great, great win. Can't say that enough. It was only our second win over there since 2004. There have been quite a few ugly performances over there... Even the last win in 2013 was a bizarre, marathon of a game. We looked like a good baseball team tonight and it didn't feel like a fluke. That's the main thing. It wasn't like tech kicked the ball around the infield or lost the game with one pitcher who just didn't have anything working. tech played well themselves, we just beat them. All wins over tech are satisfying, but this was extra so.
-Andrew Gist. Wow. That's the best he's thrown in quite awhile and obviously his best outing of the year. He gets a lot of early contact. I like that about him. He's not scared to throw it over the plate, but he certainly doesn't put it on a tee. The tempo, which is often criticized this season, was outstanding tonight as well. Few base runners helps, but I thought that Gist worked at a very good pace and you saw the defense make a lot of plays behind him.
-David Savage was the home plate ump in 2013 for that crazy 14-13 game that featured something like 25 walks (Jess Posey had five, by himself). Savage was behind the plate tonight too and certainly didn't make any friends with either dugout. I can't complain too much tonight, we didn't walk a batter and had 1 K per inning on average.... I don't know, it's still just hard for me to figure out how he gets work. It seems that most (not all, and that's almost more maddening) games he works involves at least one dugout becoming absolutely livid with him over something.
-If you told me that our top four hitters would go 1-15 tonight, I would have assumed that we'd either get shutout or score only 1 run. But it goes to show, when you pitch well and play good defense, you only have to have a couple of guys contribute at the plate and you can win. Mitchell Webb and Michael Curry each get three hits and tonight and Nick King gets two more big ones, and there you go. 3 runs and that's more than enough.
-This is two times in a row, going back to Turner Field, that we have absolutely shut down tech's hitters. 5 hits and 1 run in 18 innings.... That's mighty fine work.
-The double plays tonight were huge... Talley's 4-3 where he caught the liner and threw back, especially. It felt like we took a very confident approach to game tonight.... We started at a good point, but those DPs really kept the momentum in our dugout.
-Nick King is quietly playing some pretty good baseball right now. He actually has our highest average in league play and how has the third highest on the team. It was a slow start for him this year, but he's really playing well here of late.
-Finally, the 6:00p start was a bit unusual.... There wasn't much of a crowd or atmosphere there, certainly not like tech games in the past. I'm glad I happened to notice that in the game notes, I just assumed the thing started at 7:00p.... The game went so fast, I thought we may have some daylight left over at the end of it.
-Great, great night. I really respect the bounce back.
