So many storylines to start the season as everything is so new. As good as Asa was (and he was REALLY good), I personally was the most intrigued by Leffew. Leffew kind of looked like the alpha of our guards, which I didn’t quite expect. I rewatched the game and keyed in heavily on his play.

My noticings:
1) He absolutely looked to have the best vision on the team. He was extremely comfortable with the ball in his hands. He loves the pocket bounce pass to the rolling big man off the on ball screen and he throws it very well. He got Blue and others some wide open looks from three. He could have had way more assists if the shots were falling
2) shot looks good. Not large enough sample size but man, just cash on this night
3) I’m almost positive he wasn’t on Tenn Tech’s radar at all. Leffew didn’t play in the exhibition against UCF and wasn’t a returner for us. He won’t have that luxury much longer
4) I couldn’t get a good feel for his defense. He just didn’t get into many one on one battles, but first glance tells me that he isn’t quite the defender Demary and Lawrence are.
5) late in the game, even though Leffew was in, it was still Demary and Lawrence being conceded to as the ones trying to make plays late. So he isn’t the alpha just yet.

So my takeaways:
1) he is talented
2) I’m not ready to crown him 2nd best player or point guard just yet (and I kinda thought I might be ready to say that point guard part based on my initial watch of that game)

What we have seen from Leffew in the past:
If you click on the link below and look at his 2024 stats, you can tell by his usage rate that he is used to having the ball in his hands. As you can also tell, he seemed to struggle a bit against top 100 teams.

Stats from last year against bigger programs:
Maryland: 3 for 14 from the floor (0 for 4 from three), 2 assists, 4 turnovers
Georgetown: 6 for 17 from the floor (0 for 6, from 3), 2 assists, 3 turnovers
Ole Miss: 8 for 21 from the floor (0 for 7 from three), 6 assists and 3 turnovers
UGA: 10 for 18 (2 for 6 from three), 5 assists, 3 turnovers

So final thoughts:
1) heckuva start by Leffew
2) it’s going to be hard to fully know until we see him against better competition; non conference season always plays mind games with all of us fans
3) if he could consistently play like he did against Tenn Tech, it would change a ton about this squad. But that’s a really tough task. SEC can be brutal

It’s going to be fun to watch the story unfold for all of our guys.
