He did some solid things but with a program with the potential of Georgia he mostly just rode the given atributes and no more. Mostly after the first few years. A respected guy but come on. Alabama has won a national title in five of the past 6 decades while Georgia has won one. With H/S football being just as big of a deal. And now over twice the population with no in state big competition. So what has the School to the west have going that Georgia lacks or has lacked? The schools are similar so throw that out.
* Leadership. Hiring someone to run the program that views football as a life and death proposition. Again comparing to Bama, all their recent championships have come under 3 coaches, Bryant, Stallings and Saban. What is similar? All 3 were, are sold out to win the game. 24/7, total dedication. Clemson is sitting over there 13-0, they may lose but damn, it's Clemson. Then they had DF. Total dedication. Well some say CMR was not this one trick pony, he had balance. Balance in your personal approach is fine if 8-4 and 9-3 with 10-2 mixed in with all the advantages is ok. Dabo goes to church too but outside that he is a damn football junkie as you have to be. Laser focus. The guy @ Michigan freaking State, total focus. Developing total athletes who win and graduate. Attention to the smallest detail. Plus you've got to give off that something extra. Kirby has it, his over the top thrill at being a coach and approach to the game, like Dabo's quirky enthusiasm. People notice, fans, players and media and it builds.
* Fan culture which comes from winning and the leadership vibes coming off the leadership in the program. The fans to the west DEDAMNDEMAND excellence and put their money and support where heir mouth is....but that is part and parcel to the program building. And the right coach has no problem with the demands since he is one of them, demanding the same thing. You have to have the basic leadership at the top who sets the agenda and lives it.
I really believe Kirby Smart is the guy to turn UGA into a long term power. He is sold out to excellence. He not only believes, he knows what can and will happen because it is in his soul. He has lived it and expects it and won't settle, thinking he has done a great job to lose 3 games or so. It defines him and if that turns you off then you'd best get ready to get turned off. And he will build a consensus among the fans. Local boy, local girl. Vince almost did but couldn't quite get there. Kirby has the balls to the wall positive enthusiasm that maybe VD had some of too but not like KS. He is so obviously the right guy at the right time. I think. Now the fans have got to get their minds right.
