Washington City Paper: First-Year George Mason Men’s Basketball Coach Kim English Faces a Challenging Season
The Patriots men’s basketball team, which has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2011, won its first four games and looked poised to surpass expectations but has lost five of the last six in English’s first season as head coach

WDVM: George Mason men’s basketball snaps five-game losing streak, defeats Navy 71-65

“It was a career night for junior Josh Oduro, who finished with a career high 32 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

“It was all about coming out with an attack mindset and being consistent with that throughout the whole game,” said Oduro. “My teammates just happened to find me in the right places and I was able to get to the basket.”
The Patriots were able to win the turnover battle, something that plagued them throughout their losing streak. George Mason forced 15 turnovers, converting that into 22 points.

“We want to win the effective field goal game, we want to win the turnover game,” said head coach Kim English. Those are the two things, if you want to win college basketball games. You win like 90-percent of your games if you win those two stats.”
Besides Oduro, junior Devonte Gaines was the only other Patriot in double figures, as he finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
George Mason heads down south Saturday to take on Georgia. Tip off at 7pm.”

Arkansas Democrat: Fan events important, coach says

“Perhaps foremost, Musselman said he wanted fans to know the test he expects from Hofstra. In the hope his players understand, he reminded them of Hofstra's 83-75 overtime loss to Houston, which currently ranked No. 15 by The Associated Press, on Nov. 9, and its 69-67 loss on No. 19 at Maryland, which was ranked No. 20 at the time.
"What we've done all week is we've shown our team video clips, and then we'll stop it, and tell them, 'Look at the score,' " Musselman said. " 'Do you understand the respect you have to have for Hofstra?' "
Musselman said luncheons and other similar gatherings around the state, rather than games, give all of Arkansas' coaches an opportunity to establish relationships with fans.
"Obviously, people who come to a game don't really get to know the coach, whether it's Coach [Dave] Van Horn or Coach [Sam] Pittman or Coach [Mike] Neighbors, and I certainly think events like this maybe sheds a different light on them," Musselman said. "And we get to know other people, as well. Relationships become really important throughout the state."

Kentucky

Lexington Herald Leader: Game on: North Carolina makes for formidable substitute opponent for Kentucky

“Kentucky trails in the all-time series against North Carolina, 25-16. That makes North Carolina one of only two opponents to lead UK in a series that consists of more than five games. The other is Saint Louis at 9-8. In John Calipari’s time as coach, Kentucky has won six of 10 games against North Carolina. In terms of the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) and Ken Pomeroy’s ratings, North Carolina is a slight step down in competition. Ohio State was No. 18 in the NET rating going into this weekend. North Carolina was No. 30. Pomeroy’s ratings going into the weekend had Ohio State at No. 14 and North Carolina at No. 30…”

LSU

The Advocate: Challenge set: LSU basketball team bracing for big test from Louisiana Tech star Kenny Lofton Jr.

“You watch what he did to us last year?” Wade asked a reporter after his team’s 89-49 rout of Northwestern State. “He threw us around like rag dolls. … We were his coming-out party last year and he hasn’t looked back since. He’s a legitimate NBA prospect.”

When Lofton got into the starting lineup last season, he didn’t disappoint.

He had 22 double-doubles in his 28 starts, helping Tech go 24-8 and reach the NIT semifinals where the Bulldogs fell to eventual champion Mississippi State.

He later played on the USA Basketball U19 team that won the gold medal in the FIBA World Cup in July. One of his teammates was LSU guard Adam Miller, who is out for the season after tearing his ACL in preseason…”

Missourian: Utah serves as reality check for Missouri going into conference play

“Sandwiched in between two rivalry games in Kansas and Illinois, Utah’s visit to Columbia on Saturday may be overlooked by some. However, despite the lack of excitement, the game serves as an important indicator moving forward for Missouri men’s basketball.
Missouri’s two showings against teams comparable with the top of the Southeastern Conference — Kansas and Florida State — saw the Tigers have a combined deficit of 60 points. So it’s safe to assume it would take a miracle for MU to beat the top teams.
However, the Utes’ résumé is one that looks similar to an average SEC team…”

South Carolina

The State: Frank Martin: College basketball season won’t last unless COVID-19 policies change

“The USC men’s head coach didn’t hide his frustration Friday morning, after news broke Thursday night that up to six Gamecocks could sit Saturday’s game at Clemson due to a combination of COVID-19 and injuries. Martin, who contracted COVID-19 twice last season, said he thinks the sport needs to re-evaluate its COVID-19 policies now that a vaccine exists. “If you’re vaccinated, and you’re asymptomatic, you should not get tested because the vaccine doesn’t prevent you from being positive,” Martin said Friday. “... I’ve had this crap twice. I’m double vaccinated. Next week, I go get my booster…”

Tennessee

Memphis Commercial Appeal: Memphis and Tennessee are playing in Nashville, and that's a problem for college basketball

“Memphis and Tennessee should be playing in Memphis or Knoxville. Every year. “It’s good for the soul,” is how Tigers coach Penny Hardaway described the series, and he’s exactly right.

Don’t give the excuse that the SEC schedule is uncertain moving forward, like Barnes did earlier this week. That's an irrelevant issue that doesn't stand in the way for Kentucky and Louisville, or Florida and Florida State.

It’s what irks me the most about Barnes’ stance on the matter. He hides behind the complexity of scheduling or a desire to increase Tennessee’s brand in Nashville — as if the Vols somehow aren’t relevant there — when the truth is more likely that he doesn't want to play Hardaway or Memphis anymore…

Take the last Tennessee-Memphis matchup, which the Tigers won, 51-47, in December 2019.

Nobody remembers that Memphis went more than 10 minutes without a field goal at one point or that Tennessee shot a woeful 25% from the field. We remember the emotional moment when Hardaway entered Thompson-Boling Arena and Vols fans greeted him with a thunderous chorus of boos. We remember the emotions and intensity created by 18,868 orange-clad people congregating in one place for one cause.
By the way, Tennessee hasn’t had a bigger crowd since that game. That includes a pre-pandemic game with Kentucky. Vols fans care about this, whether they want to admit it or not.

In this new era of sports, these regional matchups feel more important than ever. Games that are a bus ride away for the schools are also a car ride away for the fans. Those are valuable customers, especially with the way viewing habits seem to be changing, with an acceleration of the trend away from attending live sporting events…”
