If passed ends that crap. House bill 225

A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend Article 2 of Chapter 14 of Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to speed detection devices, so as to repeal all laws relative to enforcement of speeding violations in school zones through the use of automated traffic enforcement safety devices; to provide for conforming changes; to prohibit a local governing body or law enforcement agency from entering into or renewing a contract that provides for enforcement of laws relative to speeding violations in school zones through the use of automated traffic enforcement safety devices; to provide for related matters; to provide for effective dates; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

Thought this was going to be about our football players DUIs. Don't know if I agree with this

Don't speed and you won't have a problem.
While I agree with you, those cameras have been abused in a major way by some districts. There are thousands of examples of people receiving tickets in the mail for "speeding" through a school zone - but the time of the ticket was before or after the allocated school hours.

Also, the cameras are often operated by a third party company(for-profit company mind you) that also is responsible for issuing the citations. I have a real problem with getting citations in the mail that doesn't come directly from law enforcement.

Nice logic. Don't watch me and you won't see me speeding.

Do we rally have folks advocating to remove speeding cameras in school zones?

What on earth is going on these days.

If you are not aware of these fake cameras operated by a private company which are not monitored by the police, you have not been paying attention. These are mere taxing agents without oversight and many folks have been gotten these things, many of which are way away from schools and not during school hours. Educate yourselves.

Those cameras should be outlawed immediately. The idea that "they are in place to protect the children" is laughable.

They are revenue generating devices for the company that owns the camera and the city government.

The cameras are NOT subject to the same laws as other speed detection devices.

There is no requirement for accuracy, calibration, or maintenance of the device.

There is no proof of who was driving.

There is no way to defend yourself, because your "accuser" isn't a person. The camera isn't owned or operated by law enforcement. The ticket doesn't even come from LE. It comes from a private company....who gets part of the $$$

I don’t have a problem with them in general, except passing by two HS.: North Oconee HS and South Gwinnett HS. Police bracket our HS with blue lights flashing and I prefer that.

The cameras I’ve seen take front and back pictures, but I can’t say if they are any good. In areas where counties run the school system most kids probably ride the bus, get a ride, or drive to school. In areas of the country where the schools are run by cities, most of those kids probably walk. I’d say they make a tremendous difference in places like Decatur. Just slow down.

No, tell us why you speed through a school zone during arrival and departure hours? Are you late for work? Just don’t feel like it? We’d like to know. Obviously you don’t have kids . . .
Simplistic answers like 'just don't do' are silly. EVERYONE knows this. It's the same as saying, 'don't pour gasoline on yourself and light a match'. Duh.

We put one or two sheriff cars in the school zones.
This is the way. The data shows that kids / pedestrians hit by cars has actually gone up since the cameras were put into place. They are not nearly as effective as a few police in the area with their lights on. The cameras have never been about safety - it's just a revenue generator for these municipalities.

If the goal is to keep kids safe, then commit an officer to the school, during arrival and departure times.

Or have the city or county donate all revenue from the tickets to school safety programs.

If governments aren't willing to do either, then that tells you all you need to know.
