Need some advice from the Vent brethren on this topic. Earlier this year I was asked to lead an re-organization to merge my unit with two other units, with my position becoming responsible for overall management of the three units. As part of this, I would go from managing the one unit with three employees to managing all three units with a total of 10 employees. I would also receive a title change and a compensation increase. Today, when I received the initial information, I was informed of what that increase would be, and to be frank, it was a little bit of an insulting number based on the increase in duties and human capital management that will be required.

I've requested a meeting with the decision maker on the salary increase to discuss why I think the number that they have offered is inadequate, but I am also prepared to tell them "thanks but I would prefer to keep my current position and not move forward with this change" if needed. To be clear, we don't HAVE to merge these units. I was asked if I thought we should and if we did, would I be willing to lead all three and if I didn't think we should then we could keep them as separate structures. However, I am worried about the appearance of not being a "team player" if I decline. I just do not believe the number they are offering is an equitable amount for the work that is going to be asked of me and the reality is that I don't need the money. I am also not in a position where a new title/responsibilities would make me more attractive to head hunters to recruit me into a different company because what I do is pretty niche.

Any advice from folks who have been in a similar situation would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of respect for the decision maker in our organization on this, but I was very much put off by the fact that they asked me to do this and then felt that my worth to the company was only X percent.
