NonDawg I can't understand why we haven't legalized sports gambling yet in GA...

Certain people control public interests for sure.
It’s interesting to see the evolution as more states are becoming more open to gambling. 💰 💴

If you can get casinos and horse racing (urban and rural constituencies) on board it would eventually pass. But you need a constitutional amendment in this state to get that done and that’s not the easiest thing in the world.

The other thing is how much money does each state make, right? That’s a gaudy number for TN wagered, say only 10% of that is profit and the state only gets a quarter of that. So the number is closer to $10 MM to the state on the best projection.

I’ve heard MGM owns a sht ton of property below the airport where they are just waiting to build a state of the art resort.

10% is profit? That makes zero cents

Heard the same. Would probably ensure no/smaller state income tax……. But but but but! It’s ridiculous we don’t allow it.

Baptist church on every corner in Georgia..religious right ain't gonna vote yes..!!
I worked in college ministry for almost 4 years. College guys love to bet on sports, religious or not.

The biggest issue opponents have with the HOPE scholarship is that the users of the lottery (mainly poor, uneducated) do not get the benefit of the scholarship.

Sports gambling with proceeds putting life back in HOPE would resolve that, as users of the gambling apps are more in line of the users or the scholarship.

Yeah, HOPE coming from lottery funds is basically a regressive tax from the poor to the middle class. Not something I think we should change with no replacement by any means, but sports gambling could pay for HOPE and more alone.

They’ve looked at running it through the lottery, instead of private sportsbooks. Not exactly sure how well that’d work though.

Really stupid! Kansas makes over $400m a year on this, are you ****ing kidding me!?! ****ing Kansas!?! Georgia step the hell up or vote yourselves out of the state. It's time to recognize the business potential with casinos on the coast and inside the perimeter! The potential and cash is there, let's ****ing goooooo!

1) I didn't know there are any opponents of HOPE. They surely aren't very vocal (thankfully).
2) I don't know if it is true that the poor don't benefit. You can go to college darn near free in Georgia if you don't live and eat on campus. And that's before anything "need based." The HOPE scholarship is doing so well that for this year, HOPE is paying out all of the same benefits as the Zell Miller Scholarship, meaning that students who don't qualify for Zell based on GPA are getting the same benefit from HOPE at least for this year.
3) Given #2 above, I don't know what you mean by "putting life back in HOPE."

I have a daughter at Georgia tech. With HOPE and Zell, I still pay over $5,000 per semester for dorm and meal plan (meal plan mandatory for Freshman at tech, we scaled back some this semester and will scale back more next sememester). This summer she took nearly a full load of online classes through Georgia tech (still had to go downtown for some of the exams) and because there was no housing and meal plan, it only cost about $500 after HOPE and Zell (junk fees). This really drove home (to me) the fact that you can basically go to college for free in Georgia if you live close enough to a college to commute. Again, that's before anything need based and there is a great deal of that Federally (no idea about state).

There are certainly positives and negatives to allowing casinos, sports betting, etc. in the state. I say that as a guy who loves to shoot craps but rarely gets to indulge.

Nobody makes anybody buy lottery tickets. Hope was designed to help with education cost, not supply funds to any other groups.

Damn right. My dad was a big financial contributor to Zell Miller and this was a big deal with HOPE and the lottery.

Funny fact, Gov. Miller named my father an admiral in the Georgia Navy. I didn't know Georgia had a Navy.

It’s a vice. It is incredibly addictive to certain people and can ruin the lives of themselves and their families.

I don’t gamble, more than an occasional Vegas blackjack, so I don’t care but it’s really destructive for societies as a whole.
So is drinking and smoking. And unhealthy diet, and not exercising. Etc

Well that's because there's nothing sinful or wrong about gambling or betting on sports. I hate to go off on a tangent rant but it has to be said.
Yeah, you shouldn't get addicted to it & throw away everything on gambling, but the same can be said about a lot of other things.

When they make laws based on "Christian values" that aren't even biblically supported this is the kind of nonsense you get.

Kinda like those mouth breathing imbeciles who used to try to tell people you should "mix races" because the Bible says it's wrong, that's 1000% crap & not even remotely what the Bible teaches. But twisting the Scripture has behind an art form these days.

Have you trained your dogs to retrieve the dice after you shoot them?

Exactly. All vices. Which is why there are so many laws and regulations around them all.

While 90% of people may be fine, these things can destroy 10% of our population. Not good.

Spoiler alert, people still do it. All you have to do is set your address in betting apps to somewhere like Tennessee. The law just makes people jump through more hoops.

Correct. The “prohibition on murder” has been failing for over 10,000 years, but humanity still does it.

You have to set guidelines around what we know is for our own collective good sn society.

Again, it won’t affect me either way but it’s not like gambling is banned arbitrarily. It’s proven over the centuries to be really bad.

Implementing policies/laws derived from any religious belief is problem numero uno. It’s incredibly silly that gambling/sports betting/weed/alcohol/etc. are prohibited in certain parts of America.

"Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does". (J.P. Sartre, Being and Nothingness)

You cannot nanny adults. Eventually they should be allowed to make their own choices and accept the responsibility of those decisions. Our essence is defined by the choices we make, good and bad.

I say all this to you respectfully because yes, society is pummeled by multiple forms of bad behavior.

I'm not going to crusade either way on gambling/casinos. I already said that I enjoy shooting craps.

Hasn't the legalization of gambling/casinos been proven to increase poverty? I swear I've heard those studies quoted. I would feel squeamish about voting for anything proven to increase poverty. I would certainly educate myself on the subject if it was coming to a vote here.
