I hope, with hindsight, UGA honors Vince Dooley just a little more. “Dooley Field” is nice, but…

… when you consider that Sanford Stadium had only 36,000 seats when Dooley arrived and over 92,000 at the end of his tenure here, then his real impact was in the steel and concrete more-so than the grass.

Sanford-Dooley Stadium has a euphonious nature to it. It is lofty. It is more apt. And, there’s more.

Dr. Steadman Vincent Sanford and Vincent Joseph Dooley are already linked by virtue of a shared name. There will never be anyone more influential than these two men in the nature of the edifice. There may come more box seats; but, the framework is determined… and, has been determined by this pair.

Honoring Dooley was a tricky thing while he was alive. Detractors could point to Jan Kemp, the Goff years, and any number of other items to which he could be legitimately and illegitimately attached. Dooley’s flirtations with politics and, yes, the ill-timed Auburn position made some of us question his loyalty to the school. Most of all was the lost ground to longtime football rivals during his time as athletic director.

But now, Dooley is gone. And, the one thing you can say is that he lived and died a Georgia man if not completely but for the vast majority of his 90 years. One cannot deny his impact on or importance to Georgia football. Dawg hearts are a bit warmer and open in his passing. The time is right.

Go ahead. Promote the name from field to frame.

Besides, we may need the “field” to honor another guy, shortly.
