If it were me, I would want to get going as HC at my new school,

not sure why Greg did not make sure that he was 100% Georgia after the SEC Title Game.

That isn't the way it works. That decision is almost always deferred to the program a coach is hired away from. It's a good system, and fair.

So letting Saban hold the cards on our preparation well into January is fair, hardly. Maybe for lessor jobs but not his one. He is being paid top dollar and he has a lot of work to do, he needs to get rolling.

There are reasons for protocol, I have no problem with Saban having the choice. Kirby has an obligation through this season, I get that.
On the other hand, protocol allows for Kirby to also spend time preparing to take over at UGA, it's a good arrangement.
I think FSU ended up regretting Richt staying though, They only scored 3 pts in their bowl game with a NT on the line.

They absolutely did, you can't win. Saban can do the defensive game plan in his sleep. Kirby needs to get going especially with Richt taking off before the bowl.

Relax, he will find time for his duties at UGA.
It's not reasonable to expect Him to leave Bama on bad terms over this, he has relationships and promises to consider.

While it may be true that protocol defers the decision to the current employer, most head coaches recognize that divided time, energy and loyalties are such that it is preferable to release the employee who has accepted a new position and wish him well. It seems it would be particularly uncomfortable in his role as recruiter--when he meets with a prospect recruited by both schools which hat does he wear?

Daddy Nick still controls his "puppet" Kirby and won't turn him loose until he's damn good and ready. Remember last time around Daddy Nick even made the announcement he (KS) wasn't taking the DC job. Kirby wasn't even man enough to say it himself.

McElwain didn't leave for CSU until after the end of the season in its entirety.

Remember too, its a dead period, he can call the ones with FA's till his heart is content and can do that from anywhere. He's probably already got his entire staff mapped out and most will be here on day one.
