Okay, now that I have your attention, let go of 2021-2023. That’s over. Let that be a sweet memory that we cherish forever. An era that lives in Bulldog lore. Three straight undefeated seasons in conference, two national titles, an SEC title, countless all Americans, incredible coaches, dominant performances, legendary moments, all the memories… but you have to let it be just that, a wonderful memory. Let. It. Go. We’re not trying to hold onto that anymore. We can’t. We struck gold in every way AND got the luck it takes to be a champion. Not every year is like that. As I tell my good Dawg buddy, not every year is legendary. Most aren’t.
The game has changed. It is now a year by year endeavor. That’s fine! In case you forgot, we still have the man that has led us to all that glory. He bleeds red and black. Is he flawless? Did he make some hires for continuity sake? Did he have some coaches leave him without many options? Does he know what needs to be done? You can decide those answers.
One of the things that you can take solace in is the fact that nobody deals with adversity like Kirby Smart. What he did with this group of players, coaches, that schedule, etc. is remarkable. We should not have been as good as we were. If your retort is to go look at high school rankings, then our discussion ends here.
Another thing about Kirby… he knows what it takes to win. Kirby is never going to be the first to do something. However, he will eventually figure out how to be the best at it. In a time where it feels like the Wild West, Kirby is figuring out how to create the sustained continuity required to consistently compete at the highest level. We are not poor. Our players don’t think we’re poor. We’re not flashing our money like some. We don’t have players suing us for not being true to our word. We don’t have locker room malice because a kid is getting money he doesn’t deserve. Should we shift focus to certain positions which give you the best chance to win in THIS environment? Kirby will decide, and he’s earned that right.
But Germantown, what about the coaching? It’s his worst staff! Yes it is. You don’t think he knows that? Kirby is opportunistic. Kirby also knows you don’t burn bridges. Kirby knows you don’t make anyone look bad who has given everything they have to your program, even if they’re not living up to the very high standard this program has been known for. Rest assured, this is not his final staff at Georgia.
Let it go. Kirby has. He’s not looking in the rearview. He’s not trying to hold onto something he can’t. He’s looking forward. He’s working to turn us into tomorrow’s power house. What he IS doing is mourning the loss of his hero who taught him everything he’s ever known; the original Coach Smart. I’d bet on him. He’s earned the wiggle room.
