It was one year ago today that JaneRussellDawg nearly kicked the bucket.

We were staying in the hotel across the parking lot from the Mayo Clinic in Jax, where she was scheduled for pre-op for a thymectomy. In the wee hours of the morning, she went into full myasthenia gravis (MG) crisis, could not breathe, and collapsed on the hotel room floor. A quickly responding EMS team wisked her off to the Mayo ER.

What followed was an absolute nightmare. Tracheotomy, ventilator, feeding tube, pneumonia, Covid, UTI, bronchial infection, etc. Several more near death experiences. Four weeks in ICU, two weeks on the Neuro floor, ten days in rehab, three more ER visits, six months on the feeding tube, countless drugs, doctor visits, and speech therapy.

God answered the prayers of the Dawg Nation and many others to provide healing and support. In the midst of her terrible situation, Jane scribbled on a note pad the words, “Re-Birth Day.”

So this week, on our first big trip, we are in the Hudson Valley of New York with Jane’s siblings and their spouses celebrating JaneRussellDawg’s Re-Birth Day. Next week, she starts on a new MG specific drug that will hopefully be a long-term solution. The future looks very different from what we had in mind, but the future is bright nonetheless.

Thank you Dawg Nation. God is good! Now let’s go three-peat this thing!
