Thank you for your thoughtful response LCD. Was just talking with my wife about this very subject: when is it justified? WWII for example. Something had to be done, clearly. The loss of life was tremendous when you look back at the unofficial numbers of soldiers and civilians killed on both sides. Staggering.
I am a firm believer in cause and effect. The causes for attacks like these date back well before either of us were born. And I'm well aware there are going to be coordinated military strikes by "us" sooner then later. Sadly, there will be more counter-attacks against "us" by "them". So when does it end? Every time we seem to take out an important leader, 3 more rise up. Just look at the nature of "them". Started out as Saddam Hussein and Iraq. Then the Taliban. Then Al-Qaeda. Now ISIS(which didn't even exist 10 years ago).
So just how can we prevent the next generation of "them."? That is the real question. Maybe we aren't ready yet to yield a real solution right now, after all, the "dark ages"(Early middle ages) lasted a very long time before the seed of the renaissance was planted. We assume we are beyond such primitive comparisons, but seemingly, we are not.
