Mi’Quise Grace

You’ll want this dude.

He’s possibly as important of a target as UGA has had in the portal. Not as talented as Damon, but already highly produced at the college level and a very clean player.
Hard to tell much based on level of competition...

Any comps for what fans could expect to see if we got him? Are we talking an experienced rotational contributor? A diamond in the rough kind of player?

Have no doubt how talented Wilson is, but I do wonder if losing a player of his caliber impacts as much with UGA’s scheme not being one that really showcases edge rushers pass rushing ability on a consistent basis.

I mean UGA lost Adam Anderson mid season and didn’t skip a beat. Lost Jermaine Johnson the year before and was still great on D. Nolan Smith got hurt and was a little drop off.

Quintavious Johnson may be a household name sooner than expected, very high on him.

I guess that’s kind of my point.

I think it would impact UGA less than other teams due to 1. Talent they are able to replace with (be in from the roster or thru the portal 2. UGA defensive scheme which doesn’t appear to highlight/rely on pass rushing from the edge as much as other schools

I think we can persist because we have talent behind talent, even when some is inexperienced. Losing Wilson would hurt. The little film we saw on this guy looked very good. Loved that it showed him setting the edge, then shedding the OL to make a play. Good stuff that is right at the heart of what Kirby wants from his edge guys.

I do think we are underselling how important edge pass rushers are to our scheme. Yes, we do not turn them loose and go for the big numbers. But when our defense has been at its best it has applied pressure without having to scheme for it. Even when they do not get the sack or TFL, they impact the play. That comes from guys that do what I mentioned above, set the edge to contain the RB and/or QB, then quickly shed and make a play or at least apply pressure. As noted, we replaced good with good. We need to keep doing that for our defense to be what it has been.

And in passing downs I think we have gotten better about turning our guys loose and applying pressure. I hope we continue to see a little more of that in the right situations. Although our defense was not as good overall this year as the prior three years, I thought we were better at that.
