The Georgia track and field teams traveled to Bloomington, Ind., this week in preparation for the NCAA East Prelims, which will run at the Indiana University facility from Wednesday through Saturday.

The second-ranked Georgia men and the 22nd-ranked Lady Bulldogs took a combined 22 team members to compete and have a total of 26 entries for the meet. There are 48 competitors from the East Region in every individual event and 24 in the relays.

The NCAA West Prelims will be running simultaneously in Fayetteville, Ark., with the same format. The top 12 in each event from both regions will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore, on June 8-11.

Two Bulldogs ranked in the nation’s top four in the multi-events earned the right to skip the Prelims by automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships (senior Johannes Erm, junior Kyle Garland – decathlon).
  • Garland set the collegiate record (8,720 points) en route to a silver medal at the USATF Combined Events Championships during the first weekend of May.
  • Erm completed his first decathlon of the year at the Southeastern Conference Championships two weeks ago and won by more than 400 points.

When Do The Bulldogs Start Competition? Similar to the NCAA Championships, this meet is set up where one gender competes one day and then the other gender competes the next, and that pattern is followed all four days. Senior Alencar Pereira will be the first Bulldog competitor as he will be in the men’s hammer field at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Senior Sam Bowers is slated to start Georgia’s competition on the track off at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of the 1500 meters that first day.

The women’s first day will be on Thursday. Juniors Ana da Silva and Elsie Igberaese and sophomore Charlotte Cattermole-Williams will be in the hammer field at 10 a.m. while senior Imani Carothers and freshman Eddiyah Frye are slated to start in the 100m hurdles’ opening round at 6 p.m.

Temperatures are expected to range from the mid 50s to low 80s with a threat of rain all four days. Thursday and Friday are currently the highest percentage chance for there to be thunderstorms in the area.

Coach Caryl’s Comments
: “The first round of the postseason is behind us following the ultra-competitive SEC meet and competition like that only helps you get sharper,” said head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert. “Difference is that only the top 12 go to Eugene so a bad day can end your season. But I am confident that our training over the last 10 months and preparation all season has put us in position to show up when we need to and show that we are one of the top programs in the country. Looking forward to seeing our upperclassmen provide leadership and our younger competitors gain valuable experience and hopefully punch their tickets to the Championships as well. Go Dawgs!”

What Bulldogs Are Competing: The Lady Bulldogs have qualified the following competitors: graduate transfers Jamari Drake, Julia Harisay, seniors Anna Marian Block, Carothers, Titiana Marsh, juniors Shelby Tyler, da Silva, Igberaese, sophomore Cattermole-Smith and freshmen Frye and Elena Kulichenko.

The Bulldog men traveled this group: seniors Delano Dunkley, Elija Godwin, Clay Pender, Bowers, Darius Carbin, Pereira, Ahmed Magour, juniors Matthew Boling, Caleb Cavanaugh, Gavin Beverage and freshman Bryce McCray.

Déjà vu Dawg: For the second time in his career, Boling was voted as the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this season. After earning the 2021 indoor honor, the Houston, Texas, native also garnered the 2022 outdoor honor. Boling has a 3.4 GPA in Marketing and was a CoSIDA Academic Third Team All-American last year as a sophomore.

Graduates Aiming To Extend Season: Eight Bulldogs who will be competing at the NCAA East Prelims or the final round of the NCAA Championships officially earned a degree from UGA during the second weekend of May, which happened to be when most of them were competing at the SEC Championships, or have already graduated.

Block (1500m; Journalism), Carothers (100m hurdles – Sociology & Criminal Justice), Dunkley (100m – Communication Studies), Erm (decathlon – Mechanical Engineering), Garland (decathlon – Communication Studies), Marsh (triple jump/long jump – Psychology), Pender (800m – Finance) and Tyler (high jump - International Business & Economics) have all earned an undergraduate or graduate degree and are slated to line up in Bloomington or have already earned their spot in Eugene.
