For those of you with experience, is private school worth it? My boys are in elementary school, and my wife really wants to put them in a private Christian school next year. The elementary school they are at now is great, and we have no issues with it. She just thinks the Christian school route would be better. For context, she went to this school and loved it, and she also works there. I just don’t want to drop a couple grand a month on school.

Well worth it…….I never had any regrets. They provide a sound foundation for life.

Where do you live? I went to a private school growing up and my wife did not. We had a similar situation when with my kids. I think there are pros and cons of each and not a right or wrong choice. You will get varying opinions on this depending on where their kids go to school. PM me.

I live in the Dallas, TX area.

Loaded question and it depends on where you live. If you have solid public schools, I would send my kids there. That is just me. Our kids are grown or in college and they all went to private Christian school. Public schools weren’t really a great option.

There are trade offs. If your wife is employed at the school, I assume you would receive some type of discount.

Private schools also have their challenges. Money gives access to good things and bad things.

You will never get the access to culture and extracurricular activities at a public school. Your kids will be surrounded with extremely competitive families and kids.

Just my two cents.

Mine went to a private Christian from K-12. Middle school age was definitely worth it seeing what their friends at public dealt with. I gave mine the option for highschool as we were in a good district with a lot of friends at the public. They chose to stay at the private and I am glad they did. They were much better prepared and grounded when they went to college. They were used to homework every day. I didn't study 20 hours during my 4 years of highschool and didn't know what to do when I went to college. Worth it to me but I think either would have been fine (except middle school). I don't know your district but maybe go in with the plan of trying the private for middle and giving them the option for high school. JMO

It depends on your's and her priority. If the public school has good academics plus has great teachers and administration it might be a tough decision other than the money.
Same goes for the private school. If your wife work's there can you get a discount? I would focus on the academics, AP classes, how many student's go to higher education etc from each school.
Also depend's on where you live imho.
If everything is pretty equal you could save the money for their college but the relationship's, academic's, and disipline are also very important.
Note: mine went to private Christian 1-12 but the local high school was good as well. Mine had many AP classes and both got into very good school's Va Tech and UGA.

Depends on what school. Private schools are not all created equal. My wife works at one here in Florida and some of the content she teaches in kinder is substantially easier than what was being taught in Gwinnett county.

However, there are some REALLY good ones that truly do make a difference for kids who are highly intelligent and need the advanced mental stimulation to help them reach their potential.

My wife and I were both products of public schools and were huge proponents of public school. My wife is a still a public school teacher, but 2 years ago we struggled with this same question for our kids because our oldest was headed to middle school. We moved them one at a time, I can say without a doubt we made the right decision for our family. I would sacrifice many luxuries to keep them there. It has been a very healthy thing for our family.

This is a good point, I think private in high school and middle school is worth every penny. Elementary is kind of in the middle depending on the situation.

Thanks man. That’s great feedback.

I'm a firm believer in public schools and think too often students miss important educational opportunities by going the private school route. From a cost-benefit perspective, sending kids to public school and using the savings from not paying private school tuition to supplement what their public school provides is an option to be considered.

BUT, you mentioned that your wife works at the school she wants them to attend. That has unique advantages that change the evaluation, imo.

We would get a discount but it would still be about $2k per month. It is a very good school though.

There are a ton of factors that go into that decision beyond finances (although finances are not at all to be dismissed). How good are the schools you are zoned for, what are the main reasons for considering private, do your kids have any issues that may get more or less attention at the private school vs. public, what is the culture like at the private, will it really benefit your kid, how is the school beyond elementary, etc. We came very close to putting our son in a private school in Atlanta starting in 6th grade based solely on the reputation of the school. I'm so glad we didnt. A friend has a kid in the same grade as ours in that school and the bullying has been off the charts bad and the school doesn't care.

The other thing that will always stick in my mind is going to a private school fundraiser and someone walking up to us (fairly drunk) and saying he was so happy he spent six figures in private schooling for his son to go to Georgia Southern.

Are the upper schools you are zoned for good/bad/meh?

Does your wife working there get you a discount?
They’re pretty good. Just not as good as the private school. Yes, we get a discount but it’s still $2k per month with one in Kindergarten and one in 4th. Price increases each year.

Imo, your children can have rewarding experiences in either scenario but it comes down to a few decisions you need to make. First, look at the success rate at the public school your children will be attending. Look at GPA's, test scores, percentages that are admitted into universities etc. Next, decide whether a christian education is what you want for your child.

I am raising one of my grandchildren and she thrives at her private school. She wanted to try public school in the 6th grade and hated it for a couple of reasons and quite frankly, it was almost a yr lost for her academically. My niece and nephew went to a public school in the same county and did great and are thriving in college as well. It boils down to what you want for your child and which path provides what you expect.

Both my wife and I went to public schools. We’re sending our kids to private schools even though our public schools are very good. Things are just different now in public schools (kids are out of control, no accountability with them or parents) and we wanted a supportive, Christian environment.

That being said, you can always tell when someone went through a coddled, private school experience. They lack the exposure and life skills a public school better provides for.

I grew up in Hoboken, GA. Needless to say, I attended public school. It was awesome.

I now live in Houston.

My kids attend a Christian school, but it is a school that is really for Christians. That is most certainly the minority of “Christian” schools.

If you are serious about your faith, live in a large city, and can afford it, then I recommend sending your kids to a Christian school that is really a Christian school (and not just a private school that is Christian in name only).

If your faith is not that big of a deal to you, then I would spend the $ on a house in a better neighborhood and send your kids to a good public school.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I would never trust the government with my children. This isn’t 1994.

It depends on how much you value religious instruction or a “religious” instructional environment. My grandkids are in an incredibly expensive private school with no religious affiliation, but they deemed it worth the $$ because of the high quality of the academic program. I’d say that in opting for any private school, you’d want to fully acquaint yourself with its academic reputation and instructional approach. Some church-affiliated private schools are top-notch academically, while some pursue a more religion-centric approach. It also depends on how important the religious environment is to you and your wife. She had a good experience there a while back, but what, if anything, may have changed? If the religious aspect is genuinely intrusive or overpowering, how will your boys react to it as they grow older? This is an important decision involving some intrinsic unknowns and inevitably subjective impressions. I hope it works out for the best for you and your kids.

I am on the board of education where I live and I can attest to the quality of education our kids receive but I think it is a personal and individual decision. If I lived somewhere else, private school may be an option for us. It just depends on each system. For example, Oconee County and Jefferson City Schools are two of the best systems in the state (I don’t live in either of those districts), but if you lived in Clarke County I get the draw to one of the private schools in and around Athens.

Our kids went public to private back to public - head master was a lady when we moved to private - was really pleased with what we were getting for our $$ - then she retired and new guy came in - wasn’t worth it for what we were paying for 3 kids. I would say if your wife works there and knows if you get bang for your $$$ - then yes - would add that the quality of your public school system matters a lot to - ours is average at best - but having really smart kids in an average school system can work to your advantage when colleges are comparing to their peers

I went to a private Christian school. I regretted it when I got to UGA and regret to this day. I go to church almost every Sunday.

Waste of $ unless you are doing it for religious reasons, or you are just districted to an awful school. Public schools are just as good and better academically most places. Especially K-8. Typically those teachers aren’t certified. Now there are some really good private academic high schools. But they also get to pick and choose their students too. College is expensive, so save the $ for that! 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 My son went public all the way. Stanford grad MBA and doing well. My daughter got into 3 Ivy’s and from Public schools. You will see this same thing from kids in private schools. Kids with good families that support their kids and have driven kids will do well in either setting. To me it’s the $.

Agreed. Most folks are naive and believe a couple of stories on Twitter/telephone game. If I believed everything on there, all cops would suck, etc. There are crazy things/stories that happen in every profession.

My sister is an administrator in our school system and she told me that they aren't allowed to notify parents if a child in the same classroom as their children has head lice. There are quite a few other things she has told us that reinforce our decision to put our granddaughter in a private school.

Sent 2 to second best public school system in GA. Sent last to private school. Private school 6 days a week and twice on Sunday
No comparison. Found most teachers at public are just there because of time served and waiting to get out. Not a shot at them because they are great but they have to teach what government tells them.Private school prepared my 3rd so much more than public. Public schools are a cesspool of woke BS

Lots of factors to consider. How good is the private school? How good are your public schools? Will your child thrive in that type of environment? We have one kid in public school and one in private school. We started both of them in private school when my daughter was in 7th grade and our son was in 4th grade. We ended up choosing private school because we could not get an IDP for our son who has autism. Our son is doing fine there. We moved our daughter to public school when she started 9th grade. For a variety of reasons, it just wasn't the right environment for her.

My kids are learning in 5th grade what I did as a junior in AP classes at my public school. (Of course things have changed all around in 20 years so who knows the actual difference)

My oldest is a freshman at a catholic private school in Augusta. She had a easy transition ( was only one from her previous school to go there) and is being challenged academically. Compared to the public schools here it is a night and day difference.

2 kids through Wesleyan 6th-12th...not cheap, not easy but I now have a Doctor and a Director of Marketing both under the age of 27.
Yes, it is well worth it IMO. i'm sure others may diagree but for us it was truly a blessing. Good luck

You’ve got a lot of good answers and here are a couple other things to think about.

We went the private school route due to subpar public schools here but we almost pulled her out a few times when she could get into the good magnet schools here.

The biggest downside to private schools is obviously the cost. This money could be used for college, investments etc. The question isn’t is private school better than public, the question to ask..Is private school better than public plus $250k more in your investments to help you and your family out in the future?

The second issue is if your family is at a private school for 10 years then you’ll see 1-3 leadership changes. The rule of thumb is that every third headmaster is dud. I’m close to board members and admin at three private schools and everyone knows it’s going to happen but it’s so hard to predict. There are just so many internal/external variables that cause it. If your kid catches one of the duds for 3-5 years then that can easily turn a good school into a underwhelming experience.

The third and most important thing to consider is to remember you are making a sacrifice sending them to private school so if they start goofing off and not doing what they need to do are you and your wife prepared to deal with paying money for a kid to piss that money away. I’ve seen more than a few families sacrifice for their kids to waste the opportunity.

With that being said…it was a positive experience for us. Our daughter thrived there and was involved in activities constantly that wouldn’t have been possible at a large school. She made great friends and due to some fairly unique circumstances at her school she actually made a much more cultural diverse group of friends than she would have at any public school in the area.

Good luck!

There are a lot of factors here. Some private schools are worth it. Some are not and are just an excuse to control who your kids are around (diplomatic way of putting that). Remember that private school teachers don’t have to have a teaching license. Also depends on the public school and if you’re happy with it. Ultimately, you got to do the fit that’s best for your child. In my opinion, unless your in a city that it’s not an option, private elementary school is not worth it. I went private in middle school and don’t regret it. But our kids are staying in public until they’re older and if they would fit better at private then we’ll do that.

There is no way in Hell that I would consider letting my kids, all now GGGs (Grown, Gone and Gainfully employed) go to a public school!
