I just want to caution us regarding Gunner and the playoff run. First of all, I’m not saying Gunner will fall flat or that we won’t/can’t win it all. There’s obviously a great chance for us to pull this out and I do believe in Gunner.

1. Everyone assumes our run game will improve vastly with Gunner at the helm. I don’t think this has no chance of improving, but we better hope like hell that it does. If the run game bogs down, Gunner isn’t Beck, won’t ever be, so we simply cannot assume he will be able to throw us out of it like Beck could. Not saying he can’t either, just unproven.

2. While bringing us back in a pressure situation in the SECCG was huge, we can’t assume the offense will have the same amount of juice as it did then. With three weeks in between, I don’t think the team will have the same emotional momentum as they did in that moment. That was highly galvanizing and that “feeling” of that moment is hard to replicate. All indications and rumors are that Gunner is a gamer under the lights. Let’s hope we see that. But there’s a realistic chance that shell shock could be a major factor. If you take the emotion of the moment out and all that remains is the pressure, could get sideways. Again, not saying it will, just caution here.

3. Rookie mistakes. Will they rear their heads? If so, to what extent? If Bobo can consistently put GS in good positions to win with scheme, and Gunner can limit boneheaded mistakes, I like our chances. But combine this with points 1 and 2, and things could get squirrelly quick. This is the least of my concerns out of the three though.

Overall, I love our chances in this playoff, though, even with all that being said. Love that we have Gunner in the wings and that the team has his back. I think our culture gets us through this, and Georgia beating Georgia is the only way this ends poorly. I think Gunner has what it takes, but Bobo has to help him out. Run game HAS to flip a switch, and I’m thinking it will. Pocket has to move. His slower motion and height will be an issue in the center of the pocket if I had to guess. He can’t play hero ball. Take the check downs and throw it away - no need to be Houdini. Stay ahead of the chains.

Bottom line: I call a Natty for us. Our culture and competitive fire are unmatched. I believe this is a storybook season for us. Greatest coaching job of Kirby’s career regardless. Team leaders are stepping up. Nobody has given up at any point. We’ve overcome more adversity than most teams have even faced. We got this.

Everyone is anxious to see what happens with him back there. We are super lucky to have the bracket we got as nobody has an explosive offense. Defense and running the ball can GET us to the title.

My fear is what you said above. Play a team like Oregon/Gabriel and dig a hole then see what happens. Can Gunner make the throws Beck can and lead us back with his arm? Maybe we won’t have to and we’ll just out physical the shit out of everyone.

We are playing with house money in this playoff IMO. I expect our boys to play loose and with great passion for each other. We will not face a team with more talent than us. Dawgs roll all the way. Let’s. Go.
I agree here. I’ll take anything the team can give me. If that’s a loss to ND/IU, then so be it. But I don’t see that. I’m happy with what we’ve accomplished, given what we’ve been through. But obviously hopeful for a third championship.

I take the most solace in the fact that we earned a bye. That extra week is massive given our situation.

We'll have the healthiest OL room and RB room that we've had literally since the beginning of August. That's huge for a young QB. We'll have time for Gunner to get max reps with the 1s and mold the gameplan around what he does well and mitigate what he doesn't do well. We will be watching our next opponent play and can get a 1 day (minimum) jump on preparation, in addition to the extra couple of weeks of practice. I don't know if any of you have looked at Kirby's record with at least two weeks to prepare lately, but it's pretty darn good.

If this was going to happen to us this year, it may have come at the best time possible. Doesn't take away from the fact that going into the playoffs with your 2nd string QB who has only played 1 half and 1 OT of meaningful football is objectively not a great scenario. But there is reason to be hopeful.

Totally agree. Getting into a hole is the new worst case scenario. Gotta have complete defensive efforts, and think we will. It’s all on the line now like never before.

Perfectly said. Agree with all of this. I have a ton of hope. Think we get another banner.

I like our chances in the Sugar, and potentially the Orange.

Once we are back in the Benz, though, I imagine we'll be playing Oregon, Texas or OSU, and frankly I think we'd be deserved underdogs in that game without Beck. Definitely still a chance to win it, and I will never count this team out until 00:00, but the final - should we make it there - will be a really really tough game.

I understand everyone’s angst and legit concerns. However, in 2014, Cardale Jones was 11-19 passing in two full regular seasons with the Buckeyes when he made his first start in the Big Ten Championship. 19 attempts. The he won three straight games. In 2015, he eventually got benched in favor of JT Barrett. Not saying the same will happen here, but lots of people said OSU was done after JT Barrett, the original 2nd string QB turned started that season got hurt (Braxton Miller got hurt in offseason).

Maybe Cardale was better than Gunner will be. Maybe Gunner does the same - leads us to a championship title and get a passed over next year. Maybe he is Stet2.0. Key is we don’t know.

This is exactly what my concern is. Great point.

It's more likely our run blocking continues to be poor to mediocre like it has all season than it suddenly become a dominant unit.

I do love the running aspect that Gunner brings to the table, but if our running game (i.e. running game w/ the RBs) bogs down we could be in trouble. Our most dangerous offensive weapon this season has been Beck, even with an the drops he has to deal with.

Gunner is not close to Beck's level. I hope Gunner can at least perform at a 2017 Fromm level, if not better.

This is my only fear if we get down 10-14 he won’t have the ability to throw us back in the game.

I’m not saying he can’t but that is my only trepidation

I do think it's fair to expect the run blocking to be better. The OL has been so beat up all year. They'll be the healthiest they've been in months when toe meets leather on 1/1/25. Our TE blocking has also gotten so much better since August - not sure what took them so long but they've really turned it on.

Will they be as dominant as other recent years? Maybe not, particularly if defenses put 8 or 9 in the box every play and challenge Gunner to beat them over the top. But I do think they should be better than they've been all year.

We rushed for 120+ yards in the second half and Etienne broke loose for our longest rush of the season - all against the best defense in the country. I personally don't think that is a coincidence, but I understand it is also not a guarantee of future performance.

Can't be understated how huge the bye week is for Gunner and the offense.

Us being underdogs or not really will depend on Gunner’s first showing. Good chance Vegas’ confidence remains high despite a backup QB if he seems stable, if not solid.

As much as it pains me, I would not count out Tennessee in the other side of that bracket.

Exactly. Tons of reason to assume it translates just based on football principles: QB run threat helps the numbers game. Simple as that. It’s up to execution and 1-on-1 battles at that point. I trust our guys in that scenario.

We have the least proven QB in the playoffs, it will be obstacle to overcome for sure

Yeah, but at the same time, QB run definitely helps the overall run game because the backside defenders just can’t crash immediately - gotta keep the edge. So in theory, whether the oline blocks perfectly or not, it should help the pursuit from the backside.

After seeing some film breakdowns from second half, my concern is Gunner’s vision in the run game. Saw more than twice where if he makes the right cut, it’s minimum of 20 yards before he’s touched, but instead he makes the wrong cut and only gets 3-8yds. If he gets a little more patient on those draw plays, could really gash people.

I think Gunner helped the OL, his threat to run....gave them that split second advantage

Don’t minimize the impact a QB who can run has on a defense. #0 for Texas was not the force against our offense in the second half because he had to protect against GS running. Appreciate all the caution….we absolutely have to be cautious in our expectations, but his impact could be very real, especially against teams that have never seen us before with a running QB. The uncertainty/potential is exciting.

Maybe. Teams are not going to keep their safeties back until Gunner shows them they need too. The defense is going to load up the box and take their chances with Gunner throwing would be my guess.
The psychology of the sports fan is so unique to me. People are convinced of a few things with this change:
  • We have this edge because "no one has seen much film on Gunner." (this isn't the edge people think)
  • Our running game is mysteriously solved because he's back there.
  • The players are going to be playing at this sky high level because he's the QB.
  • He'll be fine as a passer because he had a lot of passing yards in high school. (talking AA football)
I'm very worried without Beck, to be honest. We kind of need to reinvent the wheel in a few weeks. I don't like that.

Everyone loves the backup until the backup has to start a few games. As someone else said in this thread, we're playing with house money so that's how I'm approaching this postseason.

You said “not to be a blanket” and then immediate said what a wet blanket would say.

Sunshine pumpers only plz. Gunner is the second coming of Stetson/aaron/Stafford but all crammed into one person.
