This question made me think about an answer much longer than the clip should have required. I'll explain.
I don’t agree that the republican party, or all republicans, are committed to creating a white theocracy. Sweeping inflammatory generalizations of such a nature are destructive, divisive and untrue. It is similar to calling all democrats socialists or communists, which only shows a stunning lack of understanding of what those words actually mean.
On MSNBC, I do sometimes watch Nicolle Wallace, Ari Melber and Chris Hayes. I can't stand Joy Reid and this clip is a great example why.
So why did I have to contemplate how to answer this question? Because I do think there are elements in both political parties that have been shockingly radicalized. The clip I posted yesterday of the GOP candidate for senate in Delaware is a great example. She openly and proudly states support for Putin over Ukraine because he shares her values and is a "Christian nationalist" who defends the faith. Never mind that he is a murderous autocrat who just invaded a european country with a democratically elected president and is by any measure not living a christian life.
I'm sorry, but the fact she didn't get booed off the stage and have to leave in shame is a problem and if you find her comments anything but abhorrent, you are a dangerous radical who is not committed to the ideals of our country.
Regarding overt racism in the republican party, I do think it is a growing problem. After many instances of racist comments, Congressman Steve King from Iowa defended the terms "white supremacist" and "white nationalist" as reasonable language. He was eventually stripped of his committee assignments (and lost his last election) but only after a lot of public pressure and outrage. Paul Gosar spoke at a conference last year organized by Nick Fuentes, a known white supremacist and holocaust denier, and he has not seemed to suffer any consequences.
Wendy Rogers, a state senator from AZ but now a national figure because of her loud and frankly crazy statements about the maricopa "stolen" election, has also aligned herself with Fuentes and will be speaking at his conference this year. When Governor Doug Ducey was asked about this yesterday, he said she was still better than having a democrat in office. A white supremacist, who also is totally nuts, is better than having a democrat? You see that statement from a Governor and it should at least give reasonable people something to think about when contemplating the current direction of the republican party.
Much like the continued embrace of the big lie, which everyone but DJT and a few extremist nuts know is a lie, failure to loudly condemn white supremacy for the purpose of political expediency is tacit endorsement and a pandora's box that won't easily be closed. To bring it full circle, Joy Reid's comments are the other side of that coin and should also be roundly condemned. However, if she had cited and discussed some of the specific examples I shared above, and talked about the problem without branding everyone who disagrees with her a racist, I would be been fine with that segment.
