Good morning to all you good hearted, yet deplorable Dawgs…..Friday….June 19th……..Today is National Martini Day……..Today is also National Flip Flop Day……..Get the message?…….Take care fellow Dawgs……
UGA SPORTS SPOTLIGHT:
I’m gonna mention a Dawg great in the UGA sports spotlight section this morning, just to make sure at least something Dawg is mentioned today in this “DAWGChat” forum…Today the Georgia Bulldog in the spotlight is former Dawg Great Lamar ‘Racehorse’ Davis…….
Raymond Lamar "RaceHorse" Davis
Born in Brunswick, Georgia…..
Member of UGA’s 1942 ”Dream Backfield” with teammates Frank Sinkwich, Charley Trippi, and Dick McPhee……..
First‐string wingback for the Bulldogs for three seasons (1940‐42)....
Set multiple school records over his illustrious college career:
Punt Return Average (33.6 on seven returns) for a season….
Pass receiving yards in a single game (198 yards)…….
Longest TD reception (90yards) against Cincinnati in 1942….
Longest kick off return of 96 yards against Tulane in 1940.....
(1942) 3rd‐team All‐SEC (AP)... ..
Established a record for yards per catch (28.5 ypc) with 19 receptions for 542 yards......
(1941): Set Georgia pass receiving record with eight ...
Caught 90 and 80 yard TD passes in a 35‐13 win over Cincinnati...
Had 85 yard kickoff return for TD 35‐0 victory over Dartmouth...
He is widely known for catching the 65-yard yard TD pass from Frank Sinkwich to beat Auburn 7-0 in 1941 as the final horn went off while the ball was in the air……
Returned punts for 464 yards.. …
Professional Career (Miami Seahawks, Baltimore Colts): Played four seasons of pro ball with the old Miami Seahawks (1946) and Baltimore Colts (1947‐49)...
Prep Career: All‐state in football and basketball at Glynn Academy in Brunswick...
Ironically, Racehorse enrolled at Georgia on a basketball scholarship after an outstanding career in that sport at Glynn Academy but was invited to play in the Georgia North-South High School All-Star football game and his career on the gridiron took off after that……
He was inducted into the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012……..
From teammate Frank Sinkwich: "He was an exciting and colorful player…. He specialized in clutch plays, but his clutch catches and runs are too numerous to mention. However,I can easily recall games he turned around during the 1941 season, enabling us to earn a berth in the Orange Bowl. And that momentum, unquestionably, carried over to the following year when we went to the Rose Bowl”……
Davis was inducted into the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1990……Lamar ‘Racehorse’ Davis..…a DGD…...May he RIP……
