UGA SPORTS SPOTLIGHT:

I’m gonna mention a Dawg great in the UGA sports spotlight section this morning, just to make sure at least something Dawg is mentioned today in this “DAWGChat” forum…Today the Georgia Bulldog in the spotlight is former Dawg Alum and Baseball Coach Robert Sapp………

Robert Sapp compiled an amazing won-loss record of 1,041-293-1 in 35 years of coaching baseball in the state of Georgia…….The Brunswick native is best known for his 20-year career at Middle Georgia from 1976-96 where he led the Warriors to four junior college national championships, two runners-up finishes and also a third- and fourth-place finish at the junior college world series…….

He also led Middle Georgia to 11 consecutive state championships……Sapp was named national coach of the year four times and was named the Region 17 coach of the year 12 times……He was named the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame College Coach of the Year three times……Sapp compiled an 890-181 record at Middle Georgia…….

He left Middle Georgia in 1996 to become head coach at his alma mater, the University of Georgia, where he coached through the 1999 season……Sapp also was an assistant coach at Georgia Southern in 1971-72……He coached on the high-school level at Central Gwinnett and Berkmar and posted a 74-25 combined record at the two schools…….Sapp also was Brunswick High’s first basketball coach…….He coached the Pirates for four years, leading them to their first winning season in 1969-70 with a 15-9 record…….

Sapp also was an assistant coach for USA baseball, coaching the College All-Stars in 1983 while also coaching in the International Cup and the Pan-American Games……More than 100 of his former players signed professional contracts and 21 played in the major leagues…….He has directed the Robert Sapp Baseball Camp for 33 years, teaching the game to thousands of young players throughout Georgia including Glynn County…….

Sapp played baseball at Glynn Academy in high school before going on to play infield for the Georgia Bulldogs in the 1960s…….

He was inducted into the National Junior College Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2013…...He is also a member of the Richmond County (N.C.) Baseball Hall of Fame and the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame……..He was also inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame…….

Sapp is now retired and lives in Flowery Branch with his wife Nancy….

You mentioned today that this is the anniversary of the death of Ann Landers. Realized that since we lost Ann And Dear Abby, there has been no one to offer people help with their problems.

This must change. My mom's sister, Aunt Larisa, is great in advising others. She asks me to post daily a thread for Chat to post their personal problems. She will answer and post with her advice the following morning.
