"he guesses"...If that is the case we shall find out quickly if he can recruit and he'd better be able to. Looks for sure like he can coach a little. But facing Dabo in state is not easy. Then going into Georgia with Dawgs picking theirs, then fighting with Auburn, Clemson, Tenn and UA/UF some for the leftovers won't be easy. If that happens.

I don't see it happening. Look at Houston's last two successful coaches, Briles and Sumlin. Both parlayed their success into better jobs in-state at Baylor and A&M. The biggest college football coaching job in the state is dangling right in front of him if he is just patient. Charlie Strong may or may not survive another year at Texas. I can see a scenario where Strong resigns to take the job at uscjr and Herman becomes Texas head coach.

uscjr is a "final destination" job in more ways than one. Look at the careers of Jim Carlen, Richard Bell, Joe Morrison, Sparky Woods, Brad Scott, Holtz, and Spurrier. Whether it's firing, death, a brawl, or quitting like a dog, the end is never pleasant.

Don't believe SC is going to take Strong. Of the open jobs only Southern Cal has more cache and not everybody wants to live in LA. Miami and Carolina are both good opportunities. SOS did a hell of a job and made SC a one off plum. But then again there is the recruiting thing. Coach there must do a hell of a job in Florida, then be in the running for Georgia players not signed by dawgs and then not picked up by Bama if UGA doesn't want them. He must then be in a group with Clemson, Auburn, UF. And don't forget Dabo is a horse recruiting. Players and moms love him. But Herman is hot and can get $3M for 4/5 years. He'll take the job unless something bigger comes open before he does. Like winning the lottery.

The problem with uscjr is that Spurrier and his son the recruiting coordinator who "didn't like to talk on the phone to anybody" left the cupboard absolutely bare. They are starting a walk-on at QB and 2* talent at best at most positions. It will take many years to put out the dumpster fire SOS left behind, and in the meantime Dabo will keep reloading.

Obviously the talent dropped off some at SC but Herman has shown he can overcome that immediately. UH was very short of players having had 3 coaches in 5 years and records of 5-7, 8-4, and 7-5 the three years before he arrived. He would insist on a 5 year deal and have plenty of time to build but he has shown he can win big with middle of the road talent. Coaching can make a huge difference. TCU wins big and recruits tweeners and guys others pass on. Baylor does as well. Saban was 12-0 and in Atl with Shula players his second year and 14-0 with 16 of 22 Shula recruits starting the next year. McElwain is in Atl with a break even type UF club. Ludicrous to compare Herman to Patterson but he is off to a hell of a start. First I suppose is to see who gets the job. Maybe Herman goes to Miami or maybe he goes nowhere. Dabo is going nowhere unless Bama calls one day so who knows.

He shouldn't wait on just speculation he might get The Texas job. Anyway, Coaching contracts are made to be broken. If He's offered later, He can still end up at Texas. Besides, He's from Southern California anyway, it's not like He grew up wanting to coach Texas.

I think there's more talent at SC than You're suggesting. Spurrier knows talent, he just lost His coaching edge.
If Herman is as good as I think He is, He might win 9 games his first year in Columbia.
I hope He ends up somewhere far away, USC west would be a good place for Him.

Not disputing you, but Spurrier was lucky to have Shane Beamer (son of Frank) for many years as uscjr's recruiting coordinator. Also, Spurrier had Ellis Johnson and Brad Lawing on the defensive side of the ball who were excellent judges of talent. All three left during the run of 10-win seasons. Spurrier got lazy and arrogant. He thought success would just continue. He put Junior (very much like the namesake in the Smokey & the Bandit movies) in charge of recruiting, and Dabo has been running rings around them the past two years. When Spurrier realized how bad it had gotten, he couldn't wait to get to stepping out of Columbia.

I don't think Saban or Urban Meyer or Reanimated Vince Lombardi could win 9 games with the very, very, very poor QB talent they have at uscjr. Orth is a walk-on who couldn't crack the 3rd spot on the depth chart at UGA, and that is saying something given the lack of talent at QB at Georgia.

I remember reading an interview with Spurrier Junior in the Columbia paper about his new job as recruiting coordinator in which he said, "I don't like talking on the phone to just anybody." I remember thinking then that Junior was in for a hard time because that job requires you to be on the phone 24/7.

I know Spurrier hasn't signed the few elite players he was getting for awhile. SC has signed 28 players rated 4 stars In the past 3 years though. If he did a good job evaluating and with some luck, there might be enough talent on roster to be pretty good.

Well, I sure hope not. We need all the SEC East wins we can get.

I think he is waghting out for UGA to kill old yeller at the end of the season
