I was recently told by teammates of his at Georgia that Greg “Muddy” Waters, a defensive end for the Bulldogs from 1982-1985, passed away on Thursday at the age of 61. For years, Greg had been battling the devastating effects of diabetes, which had included kidney failure, blindness, and the loss of limbs.

One of my favorite players as a kid, Greg was one of the first “Catching Up with” articles I put together for UGASports. A dominant pass rusher, Waters was recognized as a unanimous All-SEC selection and was elected co-captain of the Georgia defense as a senior. He was one of the primary reasons for the Bulldogs’ 24-3 upset win over No. 1-ranked Florida in 1985.

Off the field, Muddy was as kind and genuine as they come and absolutely beloved by his teammates. He later worked for the GBI and then the Swainsboro-Emanuel County Parks & Recreation Department for over 20 years.

The wake and homegoing services for Greg will take place next weekend in Swainsboro.

Rest In Peace, Muddy.
