I was thinking about how silly the "commitment" concept is for college sports. They are public announcements that may not be honored by either party. Commitments are basically just for recruiting websites and their audience (a.k.a, me).
As CFB moves to a more pro-style model, should the talent acquisition process change to?
The current system is basically free-agency with annual contracts that can't be signed until Wednesday
Options would be:
- A Draft -> teams can select players based on conference or a larger "CFP subdivision" of Div I. Players sign contracts of 1-3 years
- I'd favor a "match" system that allows players and programs to secretly rank each other and get paired off (medical trainees have done this for years).
- Continue the Commitment Free Agency, but add multi-year contracts when they sign
