Let me preface this by saying this is not an ‘out’ for Mike White or commentary on him being right for our program. He is responsible for figuring out how to properly construct a roster. I am of the camp that he is a solid coach in a league that you have to be better than that. This is ten minutes of research.
I went and looked at the guards in the league on the best teams -
AU:
Denver Jones - senior
Miles Kelly - senior
Tahaad Pettiford - freshman AA
Chad Baker Mazara - senior
UT:
Jordan Gainey - senior
Chaz Lanier - senior
Jahmai Mashack - senior
Zakai Zeigler - senior
UF:
Denzel Aberdeen - junior
Walter Clayton - senior
Alijah Martin - senior
Will Richard - senior
UA:
Mark Sears - senior
Latrell Wrightsell - senior
Aden Holloway - sophomore
Labaron Philon - freshman AA
OM:
Juju Murray - senior
Matthew Murrell - senior
Sean Pedulla - senior
Mizzou:
Tamar Bates - senior
Caleb Grill - senior
Tony Perkins - senior
Anthony Robinson - sophomore
Etc etc etc.
Do y’all notice a trend? You HAVE to be mature at guard and you HAVE to have lead guards if you want to have a chance in this league. There are five total non senior guards on possibly the best six teams in the league that get any minutes.
I think Silas and Blue can play in this league, but they’re relatively young compared to their contemporaries and often playing too much and out of position. If Mike stays after this year, reallocate Asa’s money, go get a bad ass point, and get an assistant that knows how to coach offense. It’s all about backcourt maturity.
