about blacks wanting to shun the term "Negro". They then wanted to be called "Black". Remember watching them teach little black kids to say "I'm black and booful!" Not sure, but I think it was the black panther party or other black radicals leading this change. They felt it was more empowering than negro.
Guess somebody decided "African American" - although inaccurate - was more a more aesthetically pleasing sounding term to their cause.
IMO I think "Black" is definitely more empowering than african american. AA sounds pretty wimpy...and inaccurate to its intended use.
