Members of the Georgia baseball squad continue to flourish across the country during summer league play.
Rising sophomore pitcher Robert Tyler enjoyed a brief stint with the USA Collegiate National Team. Tyler made one appearance in relief and pitched three innings allowing just one hit and no earned runs, while striking out two batters and registering no walks.
Rising senior third baseman/outfielder Hunter Cole has excelled thus far in his time with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). Through 10 games, Cole has complied a batting average of .308 and is currently tied for the CCBL lead in home runs (3) and tied for second in runs batted in (12).
Cole was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 26th round of the 2014 MLB Draft and has until July 18 to sign with the club and turn professional.
Another rising senior, Jared Cheek, continues to impress in the Coastal Plain League (CPL) with the Gastonia (N.C.) Grizzlies. Thus far Cheek has posted a 3-1 record through five starts on the mound and leads the CPL in batting average against (.162) and strikeouts (37). Cheek has pitched two complete games for the Grizzlies and has also recorded one shutout. Through 31 innings of work, Cheek has surrendered just 17 hits and holds a 2.03 ERA.
Outfielder DJ Smith started the summer league campaign on a hot streak for the Lima (Ohio) Locos and has yet to cool off. The rising junior is currently batting .333 through 16 games with a team-best 22 hits and seven stolen bases. Smith is currently ranked tied for second in the Great Lakes League in runs batted in (14).
In the New York Collegiate League, rising senior Taylor Hicks has remained unbeaten through four starts with the Oneta Outlaws with a team-best 3-0 record on the mound. Hicks has struck out a team-high 24 batters through 23 innings and owns a 1.95 ERA with a .193 batting average against.
Rising sophomore pitcher Connor Jones has pitched well in relief for the Lakeshore (Wis.) Chinooks of the Northwoods League. Jones has made eight appearances for the Chinooks and currently holds a 2-0 record with a 2.45 ERA and has also registered one save. Through 14.2 innings of work, Jones has fanned 19 batters, which is tied for second most on the team.
Drew Moody, another rising sophomore pitcher, continues to be strong in relief for the Windward (Ga.) Braves of the Sun Belt League. Moody has thrown 13.2 innings in four appearances and ranks third on the team in strikeouts (12) and fourth in ERA (1.97).
Recently drafted Bulldogs Nelson Ward (12th round) and Jarrett Brown (22nd round) each signed with the Seattle Mariners and have been playing for the Pulaski Mariners in the Appalachian League.
Ward made an instant impact for Pulaski, going 4-for-5 with a grand slam, a double, five RBIs, and three steals in his professional debut. Through 11 games Ward has posted a .350 average with 14 hits, three doubles, a triple, a home run, and eight runs batted in. Brown has made three appearances for Pulaski and has pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts while earning a 1-0 record.
