We are playing less than the sum of our parts. A few amateur observations.
1. We have athletes at WR. There seems to be poor coaching there. I have never been a huge Coley fan, but this year seems to cement it for me. I don't see receivers doing a good job of squeezing the ball or running crisp routes.
2. DBs seem to be weaker then expected. I have reserved judgement whether it's the coach or the fact that we have spilt DB coaching between Robinson and Williams. I will say, our cbs and safeties don't seem to be in sync with each other.
3. Tackling is bad. Mostly it's bad from our defensive backs, so it could be related to my previous point. It could also be that Champ was more crucial to our coaching staff than anyone realized. We don't wrap up well this year, and we aren't gang tackling like we are accustomed to seeing.
4. We look slow. I don't think anything has changed with S&C but man we don't look very fast at most positions. That is a big concern. We seem to be getting outrun by a lot of people. Our inside linebackers and corners seem to be the ones I notice it most with. Are they just unsure of what to do and therefore are a step behind? Are we just taking bad angles? Are they just not that fast?
5. Carson Beck seems to be pulling his throws. I'm not sure if he's afraid of overthrowing time receiver or he's hurt, but he is not getting the ball in front of the receivers. Maybe he doesn't think they are fast enough. Maybe he doesn't trust them to catch the ball if covered. I don't know, but it is frustrating to watch someone actually have a step and get the ball thrown behind them.
6. Offensive line isn't dominate. I'm not sure what the deal is here. It's Searles that bad or are the calls at the line not clear? It just seems like they don't work together very well. Perhaps it's communication?
7. Motivation. Man we are slow to start. Is the team not motivated until half? Do we practice starting slow or are we lacking leadership with fire up their ass to come out swinging?
I think most of these are correctable with focus. We may need to simplify what we do to keep our players thinking less. I think some of our assistant coaches need to be replaced. Maybe, I'm an unrealistic fan, but I see potential, and I see us being close, but just not quite there for most things.
Tell me your thoughts.
