It all broke about as well as possible yesterday. I didn’t have any designs about going to the SECCG yesterday morning. I thought Florida was a live dog with Ole Miss, but didn’t see any way that Alabama would struggle with that relentlessly average Oklahoma team.
It wasn’t until the Auburn/ A&M game went final that it dawned on me that we were now in the SECCG.
I know I’m not the first to express this, but I have to wonder if this is really best. I mean, we beat Texas in Austin and I think we are better than A&M also. There is no doubt that we are in the 12 if we win in Atlanta.
But I don’t know that we are if we lose. We’ll have three losses then. If it’s A&M beating us, then they’ll have three losses and the tie breaker. Texas would have two, Tennessee would (probably) have two, and Alabama and Ole Miss will likely have three, but the tiebreaker.
If it’s Texas to beat us, I think our chances are a bit better - but it still feels long.
I’m not interested in any declarative statements about what is or isn’t going to happen if we lose in Atlanta. There is no precedent for any of this.
For a few years now I’ve thought that the SECCG would be unnecessary as both participants would surely be in the 12. But this is worse as there seems to be a disincentive to play in the game. And the game isn’t necessary to crown a champion. If Texas beats A&M, they’re conference champions. If A&M wins, then you’d have to employ some non head to head tie breakers to determine a champion. But it could be done.
I just kept thinking that last night and this morning.
