nobody wants to lose, obviously, but that was just a great game. Awesome pitching dual, strong defense... everything you expect on a Friday night in the league.
The CJ Smith pinch hit for Randon Jernigan was eye brow raising, but Jernigan had a tough night against Hess, although his second AB was better. I know that we wanted to go with a lefty hitter if we were going to pinch hit, and right now that’s basically C.J. Smith as the option. I didn’t hate the idea, but I wonder if Shane Marshall wouldn’t have been the better option (although that’s not a left handed hitter and it complicates things if Meadows gets hurt)... anyway, I was ok with pinch hitting Smith there.
I was also ok with sending Cam Shepherd in the 8th, given where we were in the order. Make LSU make a play. They did. But I liked the aggression.
Obviously Emerson was electric. This is really fun... I mean, he’s just head and shoulders and above everyone else. It’s crazy to think that two of our better pitched games this year have been 1-0 losses (though really, we’ve only had 2-3 games all year that we didn’t pitch well).
Lastly, Justin Glover was great in the 9th. I remember a similar game, Friday night against Ole Miss back in 2010. Justin Grimm and Drew Pomeranz. We were down 1-0 going into the 9th, we changed pitchers as Grimm was done, and we gave up a 3 spot... all the air went out of the balloon and we lost 4-0... Glover was terrific keeping them where they were and giving us another chance. He’s come so far since last year.
LSU is good. So are we. This is going to be a great remainder of the series, I think.
