Carolina has hired a GM who will make roster decisions and run the NIL and Davis will just coach the team. If you just gave out a big contract with a large buyout to a guy who clearly isn't up to the challenges of the new era, a lot cheaper to bring in an extra person and hope that works.
One thing about adopting the pro model is you have to achieve alignment between the coach and GM. One advantage of the old college "head coach as El Supremo" model is, well, it's just one guy. He may or may not know what he's doing, but at least he's of one mind.
