Do you realize we have 2 US Senators 90 years old? Feinstein who they just roll in for specific votes and Grassley from Iowa

Then you have Slick Mitch who is 81 and the minority leader of the Senate and Berennie from Vermont @ 82.

And throw in Fetterman from PA, who is not old but wears hotties to work at the US Capitol and has all his lines scripted by his staff and how and when to vote marked on his calendar by his staff.

this is OUR US Senate, if you can do your duties with their current energy, reasoning and overall intellectual capacity then it must not be too hard of a job.

Needs to be term limits. Two terms for Senate and 3 terms for the house. Then go back to the real world and make a living on your own.
Back to the real world? As if they were ever in it? Lifelong politicians. Used to be you had to prove yourself as a leader and then you were qualified for public leadership.

There are senators, some congressmen and arguably a president who are there only as proxies for their party leadership. They no longer represent voting constituents, but take direction from those unseen and unaccountable. There is no questioning or though process beyond following directions.

th

We are not a serious country.

Should go back to state legislators selecting their State's Senators. The founders had it right.

Ding ding ding. The role of senator was never created to be voted upon. And it sure as hell was never meant to be this much in the spotlight as these A-holes are now. We should revert to their original roles.

Is the presidency any different?

Why would you want to take power away from American citizens? And how exactly would repealing the 17th be a good thing? What are the benefits?

It wood not take power away from American citizens. It wood make the Senators more accountable to their respective states and it's citizens. Wood also take outside $$ out of the game.

If we have term limits, then we are going to have a bunch of shitty politicians representing us over time. More importantly, the citizens would suffer because nothing will ever get done. There would be too much turnover. I wish people would cut out the term limit nonsense. Presidents/Gov having term limits I can agree with…But Senators and House representatives not so much

Poloticians could be no more shitty than they are now. Especially in the Senate, nothing but a bunch of blowhards.

totally disagree. they are like ticks right now, embedded, figure out what the right number is, but Grassley will be 90 next year and has spent 40 years in the senate

True, Iowans elected him, but because of the nature of American, electoral politics, he has incredible structural advantages over any challenger – talk about the swamp.

I will say the people elected them (Senators and House Reps). If they are shitty then the people who vote for them should stop voting for them. This goes across the political spectrum and not just a Repub or Dem phenomenon. We have to realize who we vote for are just a representative of us. But there are built in advantages to being an incumbent.

MTG is just a reflection of her voting base and she’s doing the will of the people that elected her. The same can be said for Maxine Waters and her base. It’s up to the people to decide who they want. With term limits you’re going to have way more volatility than you do now in politics.

The senators are elected by the citizens of their states. If they were elected by legislatures you’d get more polarized nuts since most state legislators are in safe seats. You really prefer “majority of the majority” over statewide elections. The last thing we need is to take more power from the middle.

Yeah, the founders were clueless, weren't they.

The concept was that various state legislators were elected by the people of the state. In turn, the legislators chose senators to represent the state. It was to be so as to make all states equal partners in the nation; thus the same number of senators for each state.
The "people's house" is the HOR. It is apportioned by population so as to be fair to the people. That is also why all spending bills must originate in the HOR ... because it is the people's money that is being spent.
In the early days of the United States, serving in congress or even as president, was a sacrifice. It was for little pay and meant being away from their livelihood. It should have been kept that way. These scumbags spend their entire life in Washington because it is so lucrative. That has led to corruption on a scale never seen before. The situation as it is now is untenable.

Have you read what many of the most prominent founders said about partisanship. Many of them thought the legislators would pick the best known and most distinguished gentlemen in their states who would act independently. We are a long way from the America of the founders. The system wasn’t perfect and sometimes change is necessary.

Of course my dream is for coalition building to be the key instead of who can energize their zealots. Politically this country is horrifying compared to most western democracies.
