MSU: WATCH: Coach Jans Media Session
Head Coach Chris Jans
Q: What are your thoughts on Georgia and specifically their backcourt?
CJ: "They're off to a great start. Coach White and his staff have done a tremendous job playing above national expectations. I'm sure they're not above their own expectations. They're just so solid in every way. If you look at them through a coaches' lens, in terms of efficiency across the board, there's just not a lot of areas where they don't play well. They're very similar efficiency wise offensive and defensive. They're another good offensive rebounding team. Coaches talk about this a lot – they know who they are, they know where the ball needs to go and whose hands the ball needs to be in most of the time. Like you mentioned up front, Terry [Roberts] and [Kario] Oquendo are both very good players having excellent years. They can score the ball in a variety of ways."
Q: Was Saturday's win something that can be spring boarded into a run?
CJ: "You would think so. We've got a big week with two games in a row on the road against two very good programs. You never know, but I'd think it would galvanize them [our players] and give them confidence that we can beat good teams in this league. Now, we've got to prove it away from home, which is obviously much harder to do."
"I think the way we played on Saturday is something we're going to obviously continue to talk about, but we played for the most part the way we feel this particular team has to play. [We were] getting second and third opportunities on the glass, playing inside and out, being stingy on defense, taking care of the basketball and making sure we get a shot attempt so we can actually rebound the ball, because you can't rebound turnovers. We've got to be particular with our shot selection; coaches will tell you that bad shot attempts are sometimes like turnovers and are hard to defend. We just don't have a lot of margin for error if you will, and it's something we have been talking about for months with our guys. So, I imagine they'll have some bounce in their step today, that they'll be reinvigorated and they'll be playing with a lot of confidence going into this road week."
Q: Was there any rhyme or reason to the 16-3 run against Ole Miss, or was it simply a matter of making shots?
CJ: "We didn't structurally do anything different during that run. It wasn't like all of a sudden we came up with a certain scheme or style of play and then went away from it. It's just that guys made shots. Our defense was still the impetus for that run, because we were getting our hands on the ball, and we were forcing turnovers which got out in transition. Let's be real, the crowd was a big difference maker. You could feel the energy, and the guys could feel it. They had a little extra bounce in their step, and the vibe was off the charts. It was a big reason why we were able to overcome the deficit that we had managed to find ourselves in."
Q: Do you thinks Dashawn Davis is getting into better condition with some of the big plays he's been making?
CJ: "I think so. I can't speak for him, but it would be a big bonus for us if he could play at maximum output all the time. I've felt all along since he arrived, and since I've gotten to work with him that he would be one of our best players. In the fall, he was relentless on the ball. He was pushing the ball and making athletic plays for himself and others. He got that injury early, and he has had a couple of nice games. It's hard to go weeks without practicing and then play your best on gameday. People do it across the country each and every year, but it's a tough task. You're bound to get out of shape."
"We had the break. He came back, and I believe he's pretty much 100 percent with his ankle. It definitely was a lingering injury, but he's starting to run harder in practice. We left him out there against Tennessee to get him in better game shape. We're doing what we can to get him to play at the level he needs to play for us."
Q: Was Will McNair's play on Saturday reminiscent of his time playing for you at New Mexico State?
CJ: "I mean Will was never a leading scorer, leading rebounder, or even a leading minute guy for us. He started a bunch of games for us his last year, but he wasn't a pivotal guy in terms of scoring the basketball or really leading in any category for that matter. However, we thought he improved so much from year to year, and he actually played his best against bigger guys in the league we were in. We didn't see that type of body each and every night, but he'd always play well. That happens to a lot of guys built like him."
"That [the Ole Miss game] was one of the better games I remember him having in terms of production. Certainly, he's had good games when the fans or the media may not think he did because it doesn't show up in the stat sheet. But from a coaching perspective, he's had plenty of games where he was very productive with his coverage and with his execution even if he wasn't the passer or scorer. Saturday, the number's spoke for themselves. He was in a big spot with Tolu [Smith] plagued with the foul issues that he was. He was the next man up and handled it very well. He's such a good communicator for us. He communicates so well every single day [in practice]. That's one thing he can hang his hat on, and our players know that he knows what's going on. Even though he doesn't get it perfect all the time, he knows what he should be doing. He really helps us on a daily basis with things like that."

MSU: Gameday: Five Things To Know MSU-Georgia
“Mississippi State men's basketball embarks on back-to-back SEC road tilts as the Bulldogs travel to Georgia on Wednesday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.
Last time out, State (12-3, 1-2 SEC) captured a 64-54 win over Ole Miss for its first SEC victory under Chris Jans. Georgia (11-4, 1-1 SEC) has protected its home floor during its SEC opener under Mike White with a 76-64 victory over No. 22 Auburn before falling 82-75 at Florida last Saturday.
One of the staples of a Coach Jans team is all-out effort and a suffocating defense. Through 15 games, the Bulldogs are among the nation's best surrendering 56.7 points per game (2nd SEC • 5th nationally) on a 38.7 opponent field goal percentage (3rd SEC • 21st nationally).
Historically at State, the 56.7 points per game allowed is the program's second-lowest 14-game total in the modern era since the 1955-56 season, which was Babe McCarthy's first season with the Bulldogs.
The Maroon and White has dialed up 151 steals on a 10.1 per game clip (3rd SEC • 12th nationally). Both are tied for the program's highest mark through 15 games, and it marks the third time that State is averaging at least 10 steals per game going back to 1979-80.
According to KenPom, the Bulldogs are among the nation's top 35 in six additional categories which include steal percentage (15.4 – 5th), offensive rebounding percentage (36.7 – 11th), adjusted defensive efficiency (89.5 – 13th), defensive turnover percentage (24.3 – 14th), effective defensive field goal percentage (45.3 – 27th) and two-point field goal percentage defense (44.6 – 29th).
State also possesses top 5 SEC marks with a 1.23 assist-to-turnover ratio (4th), a +3.53 turnover margin (4th), have dished out 15.20 assists per game (T-4th) and grabbed 38.87 rebounds per game (5th).
With its victories over Marquette and Utah, the Maroon and White are one of five programs nationally who are unblemished with multiple non-conference victories over NCAA NET Quad 1 opponents this season (Arizona, Connecticut, Purdue, TCU).
Georgia's top scoring duo is Terry Roberts (15.7 PPG, 4.2 APG, 3.8 RPG, 1.9 SPG) and Kario Oquendo (14.1 PPG, 3.8 RPG). Roberts has ripped off double figures in eight consecutive games headed by a 26-point outing against Auburn and a 25-point performance at Florida to begin SEC play.
Braelin Bridges (7.5 PPG, 4.3 RPG) has been inserted into the starting lineup over his last eight appearances and has responded with five efforts of 10-plus points.
Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe (6.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.0 APG) has upped his marks to 9.0 points and 8.0 rebounds during his first two SEC outings, while Jabri Abdur-Rahim (6.7 PPG) has been UGA's top performer off the bench. Abdur-Rahim has connected for 21 of his 28 field goals on three's.”

Clarion Ledger: Mississippi State basketball vs. Georgia: Scouting report, score prediction
“Slowing down the guards
Mississippi State's guards will tested defensively. Georgia owns a strong duo in Terry Roberts and Kario Oquendo, who lead the team in scoring.
It'll take a collective effort for MSU to slow them down. Starters Dashawn Davis, Eric Reed Jr. and D.J. Jeffries will likely have the early task of defending them. However, MSU's defense, which is a top-13 unit in the nation according to KenPom, has plenty other options.
Guard Shakeel Moore has proven to be a quality defender off the bench. Forward Cameron Matthews has shown an ability to defend guards.
Depth behind Tolu Smith
There's little debate about forward Tolu Smith being MSU's best player. He leads the team in points (14.2), rebounds (7.8) and field goal percentage (59.5%).
However, due to Smith battling foul trouble in Saturday's win against Ole Miss, Will McNair Jr. showed he could be a trustworthy backup. McNair scored a season-best 13 points in the win and ignited a key run late in the game to secure a much-needed win.
According to KenPom, he was the game's most valuable player.
Score prediction
Mississippi State 62, Georgia 60: Road wins have been difficult to come by for everyone in the SEC besides Tennessee. However, Mississippi State is a team designed to take crowds out of games. MSU's defense should be able to slow down a Georgia squad which ranks 269th in turnover percentage.”

USA Today: Darryl Dawkins was pioneer in preps to pros
“When Darryl Dawkins decided to leave Maynard Evans High in Orlando and jump directly to the 1975 NBA draft, there was no pre-draft combine. No early entry deadline. No countless individual workouts and interviews.
“I didn’t make my decision until three days before the draft, and I just figured I wanted to be able to help my brother and sister get through college, and take care of my mother and grandmother, so I took that route,” Dawkins said in 2000, according to The Allentown Morning Call in Dawkins’ adopted hometown in Pennsylvania.
A year earlier, Moses Malone from Petersburg, Va., had joined the ABA’s Utah Stars from high school, but Dawkins would be the first to join the NBA. Bill Willoughby would be selected in the second round that same year by the Atlanta Hawks.
“I was so young then,” Dawkins said. “I didn’t care what happened. Players today get so excited about the draft. They can’t sleep. I think the I was out with my girlfriend that night, trying to do the wild thing.”
College might have helped Dawkins’ game, but the economic hardship of his family dictated the decision. Darryl and his two brothers were raised by a single mother and they would pick oranges to make extra money. His seven-year, $1 million contract would change the family’s outlook.
Dawkins faced immense expectations, ones that likely would have been impossible for anyone to live up to. Some suggested he would be next Wilt Chamberlain.
“I remember the first time I saw him at training camp,” Billy Cunningham, his former Sixers teammate and later his coach, told the Philadelphia Daily News on Thursday. “I was trying to come back from a torn Achilles’ and there is this kid from high school and I thought, ‘Are you kidding me?’ He was shooting jumpers. He was running faster than anyone else on the floor. He was jumping higher than anyone and he was stronger than anyone.”
Dawkins would be last player selected in the NBA draft from high school without enrolling at a college for 20 years. (Lloyd Daniels and Shawn Kemp never played college basketball but were enrolled.) The next influx of players included modern superstars Kevin Garnett in 1995, Kobe Bryant and Jermaine O’Neal in 1996 and Tracy McGrady in 1997, among others…”
