Georgia Basketball needs to play the long game. No, that doesn’t mean extend Mike. It means to exercise patience. I’m pretty sure that if you would have told us at the beginning of the year that we would continue our upward trajectory and make the tournament, most, if not all of us would have taken it. It’s easy to get lost in the moment. Let’s not be prisoners.
Quite obviously, you cannot make a move on White with him having just made the tournament. It would be a terrible look and a real red flag to any potential incoming coach. The list would be short. You have to give Mike every tool available and support him through NIL to give him and this regime a chance to go to back to back tournaments. Hopefully, he makes some staff changes. Maybe brings in an offensive minded coach.
In my opinion, the key to all this is to create a culture of consistency. To take that next step, people have to become fed up with consistently coming up just short. If Mike can make the tournament again next year, maybe he wins one or two! You never know. If not, then we made the tournament again and you can sell wanting to find the guy to take you to the next level. The best thing for Georgia is to keep seeing its name called.
If we don’t make the tournament next year, I think real, justified conversation can be had regarding the future of this program. Hopefully, in this scenario, the season didn’t go TOO bad but either way a great new incoming coach makes it work.
Bottom line, today sucked but it’s not the end of the world. We had real deficiencies that were exposed in a win or go home setting by a PROGRAM. Sucks to keep facing these HOF coaches in round 1. Pretty rough luck. Keep knocking at the door and eventually it will open, but it won’t if we’re stupid and shoot ourselves in the foot.
