a lot of us were concerned with the hire, although we hoped it would work out. White was on the verge of being fired at Florida, and for Brooks to hire him so quickly was troublesome. White talked a good game, but after three years, it’s sadly evident that the same problems that ended his career at Florida have followed him to UGA. He cannot coach offensive basketball, and his strategies on defense and in-game coaching decisions are often perplexing.
He had the reputation of being a very good recruiter, but I believe that’s primarily because he inherited great talent at UF, and recruiting there presented few difficulties. He has not been a great recruiter at UGA. Most of our players are limited in ability, although a few are SEC caliber. I do believe our team has more talent than has been displayed, and that this team has under achieved. The early season wins were a sugar high, but a lot of us said “let’s not count our chickens before they hatch….wait and see how we do in the SEC schedule.”
Not only was White a bad hire, mitigating Florida’s problem, but Brooks made matters even worse by signing him to a SIX year contract….. unbelievable! Brooks was duped into this hire, somehow; it was done way too quickly, and without interviewing a number of good candidates. UGA deserves better!
